“A Body of Skin” is a furniture collection designed by Gigi Barker of Studio 9191 to look like elements of the human body.

A Body of Skin

The chairs and footstools have been made using a silicone base and moulded leather cover impregnated with aftershave and pheromones to make the experience as fleshy as possible.

The chair is not recognizable as a particular body part but the aim, Barber says, is “to explore the intricate subtleties and varieties of the skin surface and the volumes of the flesh.”

The connection made when people sit in the chair “questions the relationship and level of comfort we have in our own skins and with an other,” she adds.

“Moulded leather provides a potential familiarity and thus more subtle visual impact. However, it is literally a piece of skin, removed from a body, a direct translation rather than a representation of the material.”

“A Body of Skin” pieces are currently available to purchase from 9191, with prices ranging from £440-£1,500.
