Streetwear collections continue to dominate the fashion scene, and one of the most coveted collections to date is Air Jordan x Fragment.

Originally launched in 2020 by Air Jordan and the godfather of Ura-Harajuku fashion Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment Design, the collection continues to turn heads. In this article we take a closer look at the Jordan x Fragment collection and why it continues to be held in such high regard by sneakerheads and streetwear enthusiasts.

What is Air Jordan x Fragment?

For the Air Jordan x Fragment collection Fujiwara took inspiration from vintage American gymwear. The collection features raglan fleece, hoodies, woven pants, and T-shirts in a range of colourways including blue, black, grey and Platinum Tint (off-white). “I was looking at the vintage Jordan collections,” Fujiwara said when describing his inspiration for the collection. “I wanted to feel what the clothes looked like — the atmosphere and what it felt like to wear them then, including nylon tracksuits.”

To accentuate the “vintage Jordan” feel, Fujiwara even had images of Michael Jordan in action emblazoned on the backs of some of the items in the collection. “These images become iconography — a moment etched in imagination, future nostalgia in motion,” Nike said in a statement about the collection at the time. The iconic sports and streetwear brand also said the collection is all about “honouring potent memories”.

Collection Highlights

One of the main highlights of this collection, as sneakerheads would agree, is Fujiwara’s take on the Air Jordan IIIs. Presenting a nod to the 2004 Orca pack, Fujiwara’s approach to the III is a simple black-white colour scheme with balanced branding — the heel showcases a Fragment logo read through a transparent Jumpman. This design aspect pays tribute to Fujiwara’s love for the Jumpman logo, which first appeared on the Air Jordan III. While these sneakers are undoubtedly the highlight of the collection, they aren’t the only ones that were released with the drop. Rounding out the footwear for this collection are the Jordan XXXV and Jordan Cadence.

The former is all about innovation and represented the cutting edge of technology, while the Cadence was designed as a simple, everyday sneaker with a modern twist: the heel Air unit.
