Early 2017, IWC unveiled a revamped Da Vinci collection which harkened back to its 1989s original round case shape. Now, the new IWC Ingenieur collection falls in the same vein, recalling the original 1950s first generation Ingenieur, boasting the signature (to modern eyes) vintage character and a lighter, more elegant classical appearance.

Homage to the design cues of the classic 1950s 36mm IWC Ingenieur Ref. 666A is undeniable. It’s known fondly as “Pre-Genta” Ingenieur

The new IWC Ingenieur collection was first launched in March and as of September 2017, is now available at IWC retailers and mono-brand boutiques, along with two exclusive special editions: the first was launched to mark the 50th birthday of its partner Mercedes-AMG, and the second pays tribute to the Swiss racing cyclist and double Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara.

Homage to the design cues of the classic 1950s 36mm IWC Ingenieur Ref. 666A is undeniable. Also known fondly by watch collectors as the “pre-Genta” Ingenieur, a reference to the overbuilt, hyper-masculine angular Genta design of the 1976 Ingenieur, the tapered baton index and dot dial returns in the latest IWC Ingenieur collection eschewing Genta’s re-design in embrace of the classic aesthetic. The new Ingenieur Automatic however, differs slightly – fewer dots and thicker hands and indexes.

Latest IWC Ingenieur special editions to launch with the core collection

In May, IWC launched a 250 piece limited edition Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition “50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG at the Nürburgring to mark the 50th anniversary of its partner Mercedes-AMG.

The new 250 piece limited edition Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition “50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG is equipped with the in-house 89361 calibre with flyback function combines the stopped hours and minutes in a counter at “12 o’clock”. A soft-iron cage protects the movement from magnetic fields. The lower part of this cage is visible through a sapphire-glass back and emulates the appearance of a typical AMG brake disc with bores arranged in a radial formation.

The decision to limit production to 77 watches was based on Cancellara’s favourite number: 7. The IWC-manufactured 69370 calibre generates a power reserve of 46 hours with a bidirectional pawl-winding system. Spokes have been printed onto the glass back cover, recalling the image of a racing bike.

In June, IWC unveiled the 77 piece limited edition Ingenieur Chronograph Edition “Cancellara” in Berne. This was Schaffhausen Manufacture’s way of paying tribute to the career of the Swiss racing cyclist and double Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara
