The world’s skinniest skyscraper in New York City, the 111 West 57, was announced in 2013 and is now fully built.

Standing 1,427 feet tall and designed by the acclaimed SHoP Architects, the remarkable building splices the Manhattan skyline and is perfectly centred on Central Park. The skyscraper narrows to a flat edge at its peak, with both east and west facades dressed in terracotta tiles.

Located on Billionaires Row, the groundbreaking tower is currently the second tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. It has a width ratio of just 24:1. The tower was “built with the highest strength concrete in the world”, as stated by SHoP on dezeen.

The project is a partnership between JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group. Both own and developed the tower and its adjacent Steinway Hall. This landmarked 1925 structure once housed the offices of leading piano makers Steinway & Sons and a concert hall and cultural centre. According to Robb Report, in 2014, JDS converted the interiors of the historic Steinway Hall and created luxury residences to match the skyscraper next door.

111 West 57 accommodates one residence per floor and is ready for homeowners to move in. Residents will have access to a lavish amenity suite that features a private dining room, an 83-foot lap pool and a double-height fitness centre with a terrace. Perched right on top is a triplex penthouse that offers panoramic views, presently the most expensive unit in the building and has been listed for a whopping US$66 million.

Altogether, the 84-story tower and Steinway Hall have 60 condos designed by the integrative design firm Studio Sofield. Residence 70 was purchased by an international buyer who only viewed the apartment virtually and signed for it less than 30 days after, as per Robb Report.

Steinway Hall hosts 14 residences and a penthouse — a 5,269-square-foot home that offers treetop views of Central Park. The duplex includes: three bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths, a great room with 26-foot vaulted ceilings and arched glass doors opening onto a terrace. It also has a stunning kitchen with Cristallo Gold quartzite countertops and custom smoke-grey solid oak floors throughout the space.

SHoP Architects has been around since 1996 and were the masters of spectacular, head-turning designs. Some amazing work is the Uber HQ, Brooklyn Tower, Flotsam & Jetsam, Mulberry House, Barclays Center and the LaGuardia Airport.
