It has been exactly 50 years since the first MINI was introduced to the public on August 26, 1959.

To celebrate MINI’s birthday, BMW has unveiled this sporty MINI Coupe Concept.

Based on the iconic hatchback, the Mini Coupe Concept cuts a strikingly slick silhouette with room for two inside.

From the beltline down, the Coupe Concept is based on the top-level John Cooper Works model.

That means that performance is at the forefront – as it should be for a coupe – with the concept’s 1.6L turbocharged engine cranking out 211 horsepower.

MINI engineers also added aerodynamic features and cut weight, ensuring the Coupe Concept is a solid performer is all areas.

The MINI Coupe Concept will make its public debut at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although MINI hasn’t officially announced plans for a production version of the concept, we fully expect to see a MINI coupe on the roads within the next few years.

The Coupe Concept is also likely to spawn a convertible Roadster version, with a swept-back windshield and a more sporty attitude than the existing Mini Convertible.
