Reopening for the first time since 2013, the Kunsthaus Tacheles art center in Mitte, central Berlin will house a pop-up cinema and lounge during the annual Berlinale Film Festival, this year from the 24th to 27th February. Signifying a remarkable testament to the nation’s post-soviet era, the event aims to highlight Berlin’s once hedonist, artistic and unified society.

The Historic Kunsthaus Tacheles Cultural Center Reopens For The 2020 Berlinale Film Festival

Adorned with enormous graffiti-murals and modern art sculptures, the Kunsthaus Tacheles was a revered gathering point from artists and collectives from the 1990s up till 2012, housing studios, workshops, a nightclub, and a cinema. Having evolved from a Jewish department store, to a Nazi prison during World War II, the art center had survived partial demolition, as well as, an intense period of political and social unrest.

Finally redesigned as a cultural center, the Kunsthaus Tacheles lies in a vibrant neighborhood, combining homes, workspaces, retail outlets, art, and culture – the space now serves as a gateway and middle ground into a highly nostalgic past, viewed through the visually stimulating lens of a progressive present.

Accessible to the public during the day as a lounge area, the pop-up cinema begins at night over the course of 4 days. During which time, guests are invited to interact with installations and view locally produced short films, such as ‘Tacheles’ by director, Olaf Heine and actor, Thomas Krestschmann.

As each film sheds light on Berlin as a cultural haven, ‘Tacheles’ in particular depicts the nation and its esteemed art center as a symbol of escape and destruction through a timeline of significant societal changes. With a poetic script and rich, evocative imagery, ‘Tacheles’ sends home a message of hope and appreciation of life.

Taking place from the 24th to 27th February, tickets to the pop-up cinema at the Berlinale Film Festival can only be won through lucky draws held by Sleek, radioeins, and FluxFM.
