Artist Hillary Fayle has combined elegance and impeccable craftsmanship in her recent series of cut and stitched leaves. Fayle cuts and embroiders each leaf with exquisite decorative patterns, paying special attention to how the design compliments each individual lead shape. Each pattern is unique and no single stitched leaf is similar to another. She begins the process by coating each leaf in a non-toxic preservative that stiffens and protects the lead. She then skillfully cuts them into various forms before weaving in her designs. 

“I generally try to use renewable, sustainable and environmentally friendly materials for my art, so this was an obvious choice,” explains the artist. Fayle is currently pursuing her MFA at Virginia Commonwealth University.
