Artist makes floating clouds indoors

May 13, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Artist Berndnaut Smilde is well-known for his incredible Nimbus series whereby he creates clouds that magically float in empty rooms. This might sound bizarre, but with the skillful manipulation of humidity in the room using a fog machine, he manages to form individual white clouds that float as if they were up in the air. In a photography series, Smilde forms these clouds in haunting and mystical locations including Gothic cathedrals, abandoned factories and Rococo Rooms. The wandering cloud in the centre of such settings evokes a supernatural presence. However, these clouds only hover over the ground for a fleeting moment. “These works center on an impermanent state of being between construction and deconstruction, as the dreamy clouds appear and vanish in the blink of an eye.”
