Foulards D’Artistes III: Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer Collection

A closer look at Louis Vuitton’s latest street-art inspired collection!

Feb 06, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Following the success of the previous two scarves collaboration, Louis Vuitton is pleased to share its third installment of Foulards D’Artistes this summer. Continuing its world tour of the vibrant street art scene, Louis Vuitton has invited three new artists from three different continents to collaborate on its collections of textile. The artists of this third season are André Saraiva from France, American Kenny Scharf, and INTI from Chile.

Choosing Louis Vuitton’s emblematic giant silk square canvas, INTI draws on inspiration from ancestral Andean culture, which he transcribes in brightly coloured, monumental works. Warm shades of gold and orange are infused into his design, featuring a pattern of ancient symbols surrounding the Louis Vuitton signature.

Also adopting the square canvas, Kenny Scharf covers his work with a colourful collage of astronomic motifs and symbols of pop culture on a blurred psychedelic background. Scharf describes himself as a pop-surrealist artist that believes in reaching out beyond elitist boundaries of fine art to embrace connections with popular culture.

The drop cloth of André Saraiva’s studio was his inspiration for the background of his interpretation of Louis Vuitton’s Monogram shawl. His work features his signature blue figure with asymmetric eyes splattered onto the luxurious silk and wool wrap.

Apart from the collaborations of these three artists, Louis Vuitton has also introduced two other variations of the iconic leopard print created by artist Stephen Sprouse. The Leopard Spray giant silk crepe square combines leopard spots with a spray-paint motif in vibrant fuchsia or pimento, while the Leopard Pop stole, available in coral or pimento, presents a delicate arty gradation of shades. The Monogram Rayures shawl juxtaposes faded denim-style stripes with lines of brighter coral or pimento, while the Papillon silk square is woven with a subtle tone-on-tone Monogram pattern.
