Device installed at traffic lights in German City allows pedestrians on opposite sides of the road to play games with each other

Dec 16, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Impatiently waiting for the traffic light to turn green so you can cross the road? Pass the time by playing pong with the pedestrian waiting on the opposite side! Three design students from HAWK Univerity in Germany have installed ActiWait, an interactive game of pong that allows you to play games with opponents on the other side of a street crossing, on to traffic lights. This idea was first conceived in 2012 by designers Amelie Künzler, Sandro Angel, and Holger Michel who went on to expand their ideas with design firms and traffic experts over 2 years. Their design was fully actuallized 2 weeks ago when the game units were installed at street crossings in the city of Hildesheim. Not only are the devices a way to pass the time, this ingenious design also has the ability to reduce impatience and the inclination of pedestrians to jay walk.
