The Batmobile, the futuristic car used in the “Batman” television show, has been sold at auction for $4.62 million, US media reported Monday.

The crime-fighting vehicle was built by George Barris, who bought a 1955 Lincoln Futura at a junk yard for just $1 and transformed it into one of the most recognizable vehicles in entertainment history, the ABC television network said.

The Batmobile was used on the “Batman” television show from 1966 to 1968 and features the Batphone, a Bat Eye Switch, Bat Smoke “and many other Bat gadgets.”

The iconic vehicle is also capable of a quick 180-degree “bat-turn” thanks to two rear-mounted parachutes, the auctioneers said.

The ABC said the sale took place at the Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Saturday.

The buyer has not been formally identified, but the Hollywood Reporter newspaper said it was Rick Champagne, owner of a Tempe, Arizona-based logistics company.
