Everyone has their favourite seasonal rewatches, be it a Home Alone marathon on Christmas or When Harry Met Sally for Valentine’s Day. Halloween is no different—but even though we’ve been blessed with a slew of amazing horror films over the past year, we’re taking it back to the classics this spooky season. These films are cornerstones of the horror genre that have remained must-watches for years—and they’re all available on streaming. From genre-defining hits to modern films that shifted the horror landscape, here are some classic horror films to watch this October.

The Silence Of The Lambs

The Silence Of The Lambs follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) as she is tasked with interviewing the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) to track down another mass murderer, known only as “Buffalo Bill”. This film swept at the 1992 Academy Awards, winning the big five awards, including Best Actor for Hopkins, Best Actress for Foster, and Best Picture. 35 years later, The Silence Of The Lambs remains a staple in the psychological horror genre, and Hopkins’s Hannibal Lecter has been cemented in pop culture as one of the most captivating horror antagonists.

‘The Silence Of The Lambs’ is streaming now on Netflix.

Final Destination

Millennials and Gen Zs have a unique relationship with the Final Destination films. Not only has the franchise thrilled and spooked us to no end, it has also instilled in us a fear of everyday things from log trucks and roller coasters to tanning beds. This Halloween, the original Final Destination film is available on streaming. Relive the moments from the film that started it all, where teenager Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) receives a premonition while on a flight to Paris with his friends, predicting that the plane was about to go up in flames. While he and his friends manage to escape that initial tragedy, they soon begin to learn that there is no escaping Death.

‘Final Destination’ is streaming now on Netflix and HBO Max.

The Blair Witch Project

As video cameras became more accessible, the found footage sub-genre increased in popularity, which spawned films like Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield. But it was The Blair Witch Project that sparked this heightened interest. Three student filmmakers went missing after they ventured out into the woods to make a documentary about the urban legend of the “Blair Witch”—and all that’s left is the footage that they captured. It was a genre-defining piece, as it managed to convince much of its audience that the events of the film actually took place. From a clever internet marketing campaign to the raw and gritty film style, The Blair Witch Project drew viewers into its world and created a hunger for a new kind of horror.

Scream

The Scream franchise has a long legacy, with new instalments trying to reinvent the wheel every decade since—still nothing beats the appeal of the 1996 original. A witty romp that flips classic slasher film tropes on its head, the film takes place in the town of Woodsboro in the aftermath of the tragic murder of Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore)—a seemingly regular high school girl. Casey’s classmate, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends realise that it wasn’t a one-off incident as they find themselves being hunted by a serial killer intent on taking them out one by one.

‘Scream’ is streaming now on HBO Max.

The Purge

In the world of The Purge, a new form of government hopes to tackle violent crime by mandating that all crime would be legal for one night a year. The first instalment of the franchise is seen from the perspective of the affluent Sandin family. The patriarch, James Sandin (Ethan Hawke), is a security systems salesman and has their entire house decked out with high-end security. But things aren’t as simple as they seem—the Sandin family soon find themselves facing off with a group of purgers intent on doing whatever it takes to get to what they want. Despite not receiving the best critical reception, this film spawned an entire anthology series that explored the world of The Purge and the different communities affected by it.

Jennifer’s Body

In more ways than one, Jennifer’s Body was ahead of its time—and only in recent years has the film has grown into a cult classic, where fans appreciate its blend of campy horror and sharp satire. The film follows childhood best friends Needy (Amanda Seyfried) and Jennifer (Megan Fox) who are on opposite ends of their high school’s social hierarchy. Everything changes when Jennifer has an encounter with the indie band Low Shoulder, turning her into a murderous supernatural entity.

Get Out

Jordan Peele is easily one of the biggest names in the modern horror scene, and his streak of high-concept horror flicks began with the success of 2017’s Get Out. It stars Daniel Kaluuya as Chris Washington, a Black man who heads to upstate New York to visit his girlfriend Rose Armitage’s (Allison Williams) family. He starts noticing odd behaviour around the Armitage household and unravels something sinister. For a directorial debut, it was an impressive feat by Peele that captured the social climate at the time and cemented him as a must-watch horror director.

‘Get Out’ is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
