A quiet and contemplative figure in haute horlogerie, Michel Parmigiani’s personality and pedigree have shaped his eponymous brand into one that stands as a beacon of understated elegance. For clarity, we refer to the man as Michel and the brand, Parmigiani for short. A restoration expert, Michel’s background in meticulous craftsmanship continues to influence every piece his company produces. His birthday on Dec 2 has also been the catalyst for the unveiling of a special watch every year; a fitting tribute to both the man and his vision.

This year’s release, the Armoriale Répétition Mystérieuse, stands as a testament to Michel’s love for minute repeaters and the artistry of traditional watchmaking. The minute repeater function on this pièce unique, which allows the wearer to hear the time through a series of chimes, pays homage to a tradition born long before electricity lit up the night.

However, if you can hear the time, seeing it on the dial seems almost superfluous. The front of the watch, crafted in white gold and enamel, serves as the perfect canvas for a flawless display of artistry, while the time itself is hidden on the reverse side, tucked away on a ‘secret dial.’ This fascinating approach not only reflects Michel’s deep respect for historical timepieces but also imbues the watch with a certain sense of intimacy, allowing the wearer a deeply personal experience when checking the time.

The artistry of this watch begins with a white gold case that draws inspiration from Doric columns and the Golden Ratio, as Parmigiani Fleurier watches often do. The dial – or the lack of a conventional one – quickly grabs the attention next. Just below a pastel green translucent enamel grand feu surface is a guilloché pattern mirroring the spirals of a pinecone – a symbol of natural perfection beloved by Michel. The design, based on the Fibonacci sequence (another brand signature), evokes a mathematical beauty that resonates with nature, transforming the dial into a work of art that plays with light quite hypnotically.

Turn the watch over, and the ‘secret’ dial is revealed – here is the “Mystérieuse” part. The hidden time-telling dial features rose gold hands set against a Guatemalan white jade disc indicating the hours and minutes. Here too, we spot a mesmerizing guilloché pattern evoking the rays of a sun or some pattern from nature.

Powering this marvel is another marvel: a manually wound Renaud Papi movement. Comprising 392 components, this movement features cathedral gongs that wrap around the movement twice. This technical feature amplifies the resonance, creating a rich and deep tone when the repeater is activated.

Every component of the movement is meticulously finished, with all parts carefully fitted to ensure optimal sound clarity and maintain precision timekeeping.
