“That woman who is never afraid” were the keywords on Versace Spring 2019 program notes. Donatella’s Versace has always been a reflection of herself and this year was no different. Her career-long celebration of women’s sexuality was immediately present as soon as the first model set foot on the runway. As the collection unveiled, it revealed a multigenerational twist upon the Donatella norm.

As of 25/9 (Update 9.37pm), Michael Kors officially acquires Versace for Euro $2.12 billion. “This is a very exciting move for Versace.” said Donatella in a statement, “I am proud that Versace remains very strong in both fashion and modern culture. Versace is not only synonymous with its iconic and unmistakable style, but with being inclusive and embracing of diversity, as well as empowering people to express themselves. Santo, Allegra and I recognise that this next step will allow Versace to reach its full potential.”

Embracing diversity indeed.

The words Donatella used to describe Versace today was built upon years of work and collective spirit centred on the Versace heritage. Similarly to her statement, the mantra for this year’s collection is empowering variety – which was readily apparent in the selection of models. Among the Hadids, Jenner, Campbell et al, Versace included beautiful women in their prime (Shalom Harlow closing the show). And the idea powered by two halves – fearless women and staying true to self.

The collection was presented as an evolution tide. Starting off with bright “notice-me” colours and floral prints draped onto bodycon silhouettes before transitioning to darker hues like a strappy black satin dresses only a grown woman can do justice.

Fearlessness and self-identity are more than just a sashay down the runway. Yet when Donatella took her bow last Friday, she was able to prove that Versace has it pretty damn close.
