Nude en masse

Spencer Tunick creates art with mass groups of nude volunteers

Jul 03, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Spencer Tunick stages scenes in which the battle of nature against culture is played out against various backdrops, from civic center to desert sandstorm, man and woman are returned to a preindustrial, pre-everything state of existence.

Spencer Tunick’s photos are works of incredible choreography and direction. Each shot requires hundreds, and even thousands, of volunteers. All nude, they are arranged such that the individual body becomes a tiny part integral to the overall effect of the photo. Tunick has worked with mass groups of nude bodies for over 20 years now with the philosophy that “individuals en masse, without their clothing, grouped together, metamorphose into a new shape.” His photos are a spectacle of the beauty of both the individual and collective human body, in its most organic form.
