Mercedes-Benz and Citroen have released pictures of new concept cars, days ahead of the models’ debut at Auto China.

The Concept Shooting Break is a continuation of Mercedes-Benz’s exploration of the possibilities of the coupe and gives some indication of the direction the firm is likely to take in future design.

The concept follows Mercedes’ current design visions of four-door coupes and is clearly reminiscent of the pioneering four-door CLS Coupe, which preceded similar ideas from other manufacturers such as the Jaguar XJ and VW Passat CC.

However, it also takes cues from the recently unveiled SLS AMG, with a large radiator grill (complete with oversized Mercedes-Benz star).

In the lights, Mercedes is also hinting at technology likely to make a future appearance on its vehicles — the Concept Shooting Break uses 100 percent LED lighting for the first time on a Mercedes model.

The manufacturer says that the 71 LEDs in the array “not only provide an unmistakable appearance, but also a significantly enhanced view of the road compared with previous systems.”

The Concept Shooting Break also premieres the forerunner of a new engine that will soon be available in production models, the new V-engine generation.

The 3.5 liter V6 engine produces 225 kW (306 hp) of power, which Mercedes says sets new standards among the competition in terms of fuel consumption.

Mercedes-Benz joins several other automakers who are known to be preparing debuts of both concepts and production vehicles for Auto China, which begins on April 23.

SAIC, one of China’s largest manufacturers will introduce its all-electric concept car, the E1, whilst Citroen will debut it’s Metropolis concept, created as an homage to China.

Auto China 2010 is open to the public from April 25 – May 2, 2010.
