Preventative Aesthetics: Why Achievers Are Starting Earlier

Preventative aesthetics are gaining ground among young achievers, reframing cosmetic treatments as investments in appearance and professional image.

The shift from reactive to preventative care has been established in fitness, nutrition, and health screening. Why not aesthetics? When you start early, effects can look more natural, be less noticeable, and signs of aging can even be reduced long-term.

Preventative aesthetics are especially common with early achievers. Those who plan early with their careers, finances, and portfolios also often have their eye on cosmetic appearance.  Beyond aesthetics, it can get them a leg up in their chosen industry.

Learn more about this trend and what’s behind it.

Why Prevention is Replacing Correction

A Varani et al. study found a 38% decrease in collagen production between ages 25 and 80. While the exact onset varies, this decline underscores why many providers frame prevention as a long-term strategy rather than a reactive one. Here are some additional factors that support this outlook.

  • A Less Noticeable Transition: Getting procedures gradually over time means you don’t go from wrinkles one day to a tightened appearance the next, making cosmetic care less obvious.
  • Natural Appearance with Microdoses: Younger people typically require only microdoses of fillers, contributing to a more natural appearance.
  • Could Minimize Wrinkles Long-Term: In an identical twin study, a woman who got regular procedures showed fewer active lines, even after the Botox had worn off, as compared to her twin who only got occasional procedures, due to Botox relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles.
  • Botox Has a Ceiling: Botox relaxes dynamic wrinkles caused by movement. It is not as effective on static wrinkles, caused by years of movement and collagen loss.

Who’s Starting Earlier and Why

The trend of earlier preventative aesthetics is especially prevalent in achievers, people in their late 20s and 30s, with public-facing careers, like entrepreneurs and executives who work in media, tech, finance, real estate, and entertainment. Individuals in these industries are more likely to be involved in video conferencing, online workshops, and social media tutorials that require them to appear online, and they want to look their best.

But cosmetic procedures can also be advantageous in helping them climb the corporate ladder. For example:

Experimental hiring simulations show younger-looking candidates have higher hireability ratings than older-looking candidates of the same chronological age, especially for customer-facing roles.

What Preventative Aesthetics Actually Looks Like

So which procedures are these early achievers getting? Here are a few popular ones:

  • Micro-Dosed Neuromodulators (Baby Botox): Very small, diluted amounts of Botox are injected to improve fine lines and texture without freezing movement.
  • Microneedling: A device with fine needles punctures the skin’s surface to create a small injury, stimulating collagen production in the wound-healing process.
  • Collagen Biostimulators: Poly L-lactic acid is injected beneath the skin, encouraging cells to produce more of their own collagen.
  • High-Grade Skincare: Those who prefer more natural methods may invest in high-grade skincare products like retinoids and antioxidants that support the skin’s collagen production, and SPF, which prevents UV-driven collagen breakdown.

The Financial Mindset Shift

Preventative aesthetics may be an investment in your future, but they are still costly, and forward-thinking people typically budget them as an ongoing expense. Here are some tips that may help with financial planning:

  • Treat It Like a Subscription: Procedures are typically required quarterly or biannually, making it more of a line item than an occasional expense.
  • Separate Maintenance from Milestone Spending: A Botox touch-up may be part of your ‘subscription expenses’, but every so often, you may want to splurge on a Sculptra series or laser package. Budgeting separately avoids the sticker shock of having to save for both at once.
  • Price Out the Annual Cost: Individual visits may seem more manageable than annual spend, but being realistic about yearly totals provides an accurate picture.
  • Build a Buffer for Graduated Treatments: As results compound, you may find you need less of one treatment, allowing you to add more of another. Leave a buffer in your budget to allow for adjusting costs.
  • Consider a Payment Plan: Covering treatments with a payment plan makes budgeting even easier. With set payments, you have insight into exactly how much you’ll spend each month or year, and spreading payments over time makes care more affordable. It also helps to find a payment plan with low rates and no-interest periods. Cherry and Care Credit are common well-known options.

Choosing the Right Provider

Working with the right provider ensures you get the best outcomes, based on safety and aesthetics. Here are some things to look for when you shop around.

  • Board Certification: Dermatologists and surgeons undergo standardized training and should be able to show proof of certification. Med spa injectors’ qualifications vary and should be assessed before committing to a treatment.
  • The Consultation Process: Most providers will offer a free consultation, allowing you to evaluate their skills and services. Ensure they understand your goals and are ready to focus on facial movement over a treatment menu. Ask to see before-and-after photos and ensure they align with your desired outcome.
  • Don’t Let Price Be the Deciding Factor: While cost is a consideration, it’s more important to find a qualified provider. Inconsistent or poorly placed treatments can mean redoing work or correcting results later, which will cost more in the long run.
  • Check for Specialization in Prejuvenation, Not Correction: Providers who work with young patients tend to default to conservative dosing and subtlety, which is ideal for early achievers. Those focused on older clients who tend to need corrective care may overdo it.

Staying Competitive with Preventative Aesthetics

Cosmetic procedures are about more than looking good. They can make a real difference in your income, leading to more job opportunities and increased hireability. Cost is a factor, but as an early achiever, you can plan ahead and make them more affordable.
