American painter and photographer from Bay area Sam Grant has created a series of retro-inspired, surreal paintings he also calls “Double Vision”. This series was recently showcased at the Loakal Art Gallery in Oakland, USA. His works draw influence from both vintage looking images as well as contemporary pop culture elements. This culminates in his collage compositions, which have been said to “border on surreal”. His pieces convey his own wild imagination; one that speaks to a time before ours. Despite some his paintings being realistic, he still renders the settings within each painting with a whimsical appeal. Witty texts are also included in his collage to contemporize these retro poster-like paintings. All in all, Grant makes the viewers want to go back to the simpler times and reminisce on the beauty and culture of that time.
