Living In the Belly of The Bear

Abraham poincheval experiences animal hibernation in a challenging art installation

Apr 14, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Positioned in the center of the musée de la chasse et de la nature in Paris is a hollowed-out carcass of a bear. Lying inside it is Abraham Poincheval, an artist who is living in it for 2 weeks as part of an art installation that explores animal hibernation. For 13 days and nights, beginning on April 1st 2014, Poincheval will remain in this enclosure, keeping basic necessities needed for survival. Within his enclosure contains water, food and a book to keep the stationary artist entertained. He takes inspiration from animals hibernating during the winter, attempting to simulate the experience of residing in an enclosed hole for an extended period. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the artist and the performance is also relayed to viewers all over the work via a 24-hour live feed of his activities. His aim for this art installation is to explore his own physical limits as well as to experience human nature.
