As part of Singapore’s plans in restoring the tourism and lifestyle sectors, the Formula 1 Grand Prix will be returning for another seven years.

The last two night races were cancelled due to Covid-19 and the recent renewal is the longest it has been since the previous four-year extension in 2017.

While we see some recovery in travel, the contract between Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Singapore Grand Prix (SGP) and Formula 1 is a long-term promise in reconstructing Singapore as a prime lifestyle and business destination.

“The renewal will help sustain Singapore’s reputation as a global city with a vibrant lifestyle, attracting international visitors as travel rebounds, and generating business revenue and jobs for Singaporeans,” said Mr S. Iswaran, Minister for Transport and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations.

The last SGP race was held in September 2019, where Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel took the win. The German currently drives for Aston Martin

After a two-year-long wait and a fair bit of disappointment, the organisers and fans are buzzing about the comeback. The night race remains one of the most highly anticipated within the racing calendar, with its unique street circuit – which darts through the heart of Singapore – as well as stirring lifestyle and entertainment programmes.

In a press statement, Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali said Singapore “holds a special place on the F1 calendar” and the partnership is a part of F1’s “commitment to continue to grow the sport in Asia”.

Other than that, STB and SGP are also coming together to focus on sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of the Singapore race by increasing recycling efforts and switching to renewable energy as well as sustainable materials.

Even though the global pandemic did pose several challenges to the races, 2021’s edition was one of the most exciting and dramatic of all — Lewis Hamilton securing his 100th win at Russian GP and his possible retirement, new F1 teams arising and the usual team switching situations, Max Verstappen winning the F1 Drivers’ World Championship, the controversy surrounding rule changes during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

This year’s edition is scheduled for 2 October at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. We can only expect more thrill and action in 2022!
