A family-owned whisky firm in Scotland has released what they say is one of the oldest single malts in the world and is selling the bottle for £13,000.

The Glenlivet 70 Years Old is touted as the follow-up to their Mortlach single malt launched last year — the oldest in the world, say Gordon & MacPhail.

Like its predecessor which spent 70 years aging in a cask, The Glenlivet is also a septuagenarian single malt which has been maturing quietly in its cask since February 3, 1940, when it was first put to bed by company forefather John Urquhart.

Each bottle is presented in a tear-shaped, hand-blown crystal decanter with a British Hallmarked silver stopper.

The limited edition range will sell a hundred 70cl bottles for £13,000, and 175 20cl bottles for £3,200 through the year.

The company is also releasing a limited edition “Private Collection” set that contains a bottle from every decade between 1950 through to the 1990s for £2,850.

Last fall, the Dalmore Trinitas, a 64-year-old single malt Scotch from Whyte & Mackay, became the first in the world to break the six-figure mark and fetch the princely sum of £100,000.

Part of the reason for the astronomical price was that only three bottles of the malt were produced.

At the time, industry experts estimated that a typical 50ml dram of the liquid gold could cost up to £20,000 per glass if sold in exclusive restaurants and clubs.

US property developer and whisky collector Mahesh Patel, and Sukhinder Singh, who runs the Whisky Exchange brokerage in the UK bought two bottles.
