As previously rumored, mega-star Madonna will debut her fashion range for Macy’s, called Material Girl, this August.

“Material Girl is a newly created, fast-fashion junior collection that will launch exclusively in approximately 200 Macy’s stores and online at www.macys.com in August 2010 for the back-to-school season,” read a statement from the Iconix Group, with which Madonna has formed a new venture called MG ICON to release the clothing line for the US department store.

According to the same statement, the range was inspired by Lourdes and designed by Madonna with the help of a creative team, and will retail at prices between $12 and $40.

Footwear, handbags and jewelry will be included.

It is not the first time the star has designed clothes — she launched a line at Swedish retailer H&M in 2007 — and she joins a long list of celebrities who have ventured into fashion: New York fashion week alone saw the presentations of the collections by Gwen Stefani (L.A.M.B), Alexa Chung (Madewell), the Olsen twins (The Row), and Kim Kardashian (bebe).

Even though Madonna is no stranger to fashion, having appeared in Dolce & Gabbana’s and Louis Vuitton’s recent campaigns and served as muse to designers including Jean Paul Gaultier, the news has been greeted with skepticism, due to the “tacky” and “unoriginal” name of the line, but also because of a growing “overkill’ of celebrity fashion lines.

Nevertheless, rarely a week goes by without another star announcing their own designs: as it emerged this week, British supermodel Twiggy will bring hers to US shopping channel HSN in April.
