Floating Forms

Leah Yerpe’s elegant series explores a variety of body forms

Nov 29, 2014 | By Staff Writer

New York Based illustrator Leah Yerpe captures images of a dream-like state. In her new series, she paints and sketches distorted and twisted bodies floating and falling from space. At first glance, it might seem like a group of people fighting and falling together in midair. However, these multiple figures are actually the positions of the different stages of a single person falling down. In her black and white drawings, she plays with light and shading to depict the graceful floating figures. Her attention to detail- from the crinkles of their shirts to the strands of their hair- is impeccable. Yerpe’s other works also explore the different positions of the body. Yerpe explains: “I enjoy using the human figure in my work because we cannot help but project on and relate to it. The bodies in my work are multiplied in different poses…I never pose my models; they have free reign to move in an immediate, improvised dance.”
