Kaleidoscopic Glass Installations by Olafur Eliasson

Artist transforms exhibition space into a psychedelic wonderland

Oct 24, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Olafur Eliasson’s niche is filling entire rooms with his installation to give the viewers a multi-sensory, all-encompassing experience. Recently, the Copenhagen and Berlin-based artist transformed an entire museum space into a natural rocky terrain with a river running through the middle of the exhibit. His latest installation follows in the same vein of his expansive installations where Eliasson uses mirrors, tinted glass, stainless steel frames and lightbulbs to form an enormous kaleidoscope installation.  Installed in a museum space, the large kaleidoscopic work transforms its surroundings into a psychedelic wonderland. The discoball lamps give off dazzling patterns on the walls, ceilings and floors of the space, creating a fantastical realm of beauty, and mesmerizing the visitors walking through.

“I often work with geometric shapes and with non-Euclidean geometry,” Eliasson explains. “[I]t is very much about movement and time, because each polyhedron has an LED light at its centre, and when you walk around beneath the artwork, light sparkles through the cracks in the frames above, so that the viewer is instrumental in making a composition of light in transformation. It is like a sound composition, only there is no sound.”
