Macau hotelier wins bid for Michael Jackson’s glove

Macau’s Ponte 16 casino will display next year ten pieces of iconic Michael Jackson memorabilia, including the cream leather rhinestone glove he wore for his first Moonwalk performance on television.

Michael Jackson’s glove was sold to Hoffman Ma, deputy chief executive of the casino, at New York’s Julien’s Auctions at a whopping US$350,000.

“We’re a bit surprised that we were able to acquire the glove, as there’s a high demand for it among bidders.”

Gelman’s masterpiece Chess sets

Media artist, Alexander Gelman, in collaboration with traditional Japanese artisans has designed an exquisite limited edition series of master chess sets.

The sleek and stunning sets are made of lacquer, silver plating and gold leaf — there are only 5 in the world, each is unique and priced up to $55,000.

Gelman and the artisans took up to 10 months to produce each piece by hand, using century old techniques.

US billionaire gives Irish tourism a boost

Chuck Feeney, the billionaire philanthropist, is to co-fund a holiday voucher scheme to boost American tourism to Ireland next year.

The 78-year-old Irish American has offered to match government funds to revive the flagging tourism industry, which slumped by 12% this year.

He will support a scheme to offer $100 holiday vouchers to Americans planning a trip to Ireland according to the London Times.

Following the news that surrealist filmmaker David Lynch is shooting the new ‘Lady Dior’ commercial, Dior has launched a new series of short films to accompany its ‘New Lock’ bag.

Directed by Peter Lindberg and Darius Khondji, the clips show French actress Nora Arnezeder artfully playing around with the luxurious bag in a series of stylishly urban set-ups.

Lanvin launches rosy spring perfume in 2010

Lanvin has announced the release of an update of its Jeanne fragrance, the label’s creative director Alber Elbaz’s hommage to founder Jeanne Lanvin.

The limited-edition Jeanne La Rose will be “more romantic” and “more couture” than its predecessor, according to the brand.

Rose essence is a universal ingredient in perfumery, and rose scent-dominated fragrances have always been popular.

Steps from Eiffel Tower sell for 85,000 euros

A piece of a staircase from the Eiffel Tower sold at auction for 85,000 euros (124,000 dollars) in Paris on Monday.

The 7.8-metre chunk of the tower’s spiral staircase, containing 40 steps, was part of a larger piece removed from the tower in 1983.

It was bought on Monday by an ironworker from the town of Troyes, east of Paris, during a sale of Paris-themed souvenirs at the Drouot auction house.

Luxury Brands Still Strong in China

A survey just released in China has lifted the lid on the nation’s obsession with luxury brands and identified just where consumers are spending their money.

The 2009 21st Century Deluxe Report (www.21deluxereport.com — in Chinese only) says that China’s love affair with luxury shows no signs of abating.

According to one Professor Lu Xiao (Fudan University), who was in charge of the survey, decisions on spending made in China are now “knowledged-based.”

Lara Stone to Unseat Madonna for Louis Vuitton

French luxury giant Louis Vuitton has unveiled next February’s ad campaign to the press, starring Madonna ‘replacement,’ supermodel Lara Stone.

Antoine Arnault, Vuitton’s communication director, said: “After two seasons with such a huge star, Marc Jacobs decided to take a breather and work with a model – and not just any model. It’s the choice of a new supermodel.”

Madonna was tapped earlier this year to star in Italian Vuitton competitor Dolce & Gabbana’s ads, a choice many deemed more fitting for the superstar.

Bugatti 100th anniversary exhibition in Brussels

From December 18th, 2009 to January 17th, 2010, Autoworld Brussels will host an exhibition displaying 30 of the prestige carmaker’s most iconic models.

From King Léopold III’s own Bugatti to the present-day Veyron Grand Sport, this exhibition marks the end of the centenary celebrations.
