Ray Ban Scuderia Ferrari Sunglasses Collection

When legendary names Ray-Ban and Ferrari join forces, it’s bound to be stellar collaboration.

There’s no cooler pairing than a sleek, fast drive with some cool shades from the Scuderia Ferrari Collection.

Inspired by the Formula 1 stars of the 1970’s, this collection definitely has a retro feel, yet all the shades were designed with the latest technology. Each pair of shades in the collection is made of Ray-Ban’s state-of-the-art, super light Lifeforce frames and thin metal temples.

There are 12 other distinct styles to choose from, ranging from angular to curvy, including the carbon fiber Monaco Limited Edition in gunmetal that really caught our eyes. Designed for the F1 GOAT team, this comprehensive group of shades come in a variety of colors, including Ferrari red and Modena yellow, and each pair is inscribed with the timeless Ray-Ban and Ferrari logos.

Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Eyewear

Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Eyewear: Woven Luxury

Anyone worth their luxury handbags would recognise Bottega Veneta’s Intrecciato weave in a heartbeat. This season, fans of the classic design can rejoice – the Italian luxury goods house has extended the iconic motif to an extensive range of eyewear that includes sunglasses and prescription glasses.

Set to arrive in three distinct collections, the eyewear range is an extension of Tomas Maier’s polished, unfussy ready-to-wear collection for fall. The Light Intrecciato Profile sees the Intrecciato detail subtly applied to both unisex and feminine frame shapes, finished with tonal or contrasting color nuances and two iconic rivets on the temples. The Intrecciato Eyes range is the boldest iteration within the series, defined by an eyebrow metal insert with the engraved motif that runs along the unisex browline frame. The Intrecciato Rim optical unisex style might see the woven motif engraved throughout, but the resulting look remains light and versatile.

Available in matte or semi-matte finishes, the Intrecciato eyewear range sees a colour palette of black, brown and Havana, with accents of blues, greens and pinks for good measure. Expect the best in quality – the Italian label only uses premium Italian acetate and Japanese titanium in its manufacturing, and each pair is hand-crafted by expert artisans that hail from both countries.

This season, Shanghai Tang brings back the forgotten vision of Chinese chic with three new colour combinations of its iconic retro Chinese round frames sunglasses.

The Hong Kong-based company also celebrated the launch of its latest eyewear collection with a Pre-Summer cocktail party, an extravaganza which saw the attendance of celebrities such as Korean actor Jin Goo of Descendants of the Sun fame.

Dior, Rihanna Collaborate on Sunglasses

The names Rihanna and Dior might not seem like much of a match but the latest collaboration between the two speaks otherwise. For her second collaborative project with the French House, the Grammy Award-winning singer designed (from scratch, no less) a series of very futuristic looking sunglasses.

Inspired by the visor of Star Trek’s La Forge, the collection sees the frame in six color variations, including silver, pink, blue, green, red and a 24k gold-plated version. This may be the first time Dior has given its ambassador an opportunity to partake in the design process, but Rihanna is more than qualified. She released her Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection at New York Fashion Week in Febuary, and has since worked with Manolo Blahnik on a range of denim-centric footwear.

“We are very pleased to partner for the second time with Rihanna,” said Dior chief executive officer Sidney Toledano. “She is an artist, an entertainer, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and a style icon for today’s generation.”

Focus: Bulgari Spring/Summer 2016

Classic Bulgari favorites get a modern and luxurious refresh this season. The line is expectedly timeless, elegant, and painstakingly crafted to the standards that the house’s jewels have become known for. The spotlight, however, falls on a majestic limited-edition piece that incorporates an intriguing blend of time, tradition and textures.

Modern luxury dictates discretion of voice and a considered restraint from vulgar flaunting – this isn’t the logo-manic ’90s any more. The Bulgari-Bulgari line of bags keeps this in mind with an engraved enameled logo that falls neatly into the front sleeve, half hidden by leather – almost careless, but with precision of thought and design, surely. The bags come minimally detailed, bar the gently contrasting perspicio (latin for “see-through”) strip running horizontally across the fronts. We love these bags for the distinguished way they embody luxury without ever yelling for attention.

If bags are where the details whisper, then eyewear is where they come out in force. The frames of the Giardini Italiani sunglasses from Bulgari feature lush detailing along the outer corners and temples. The latter feature hand-set Austrian crystals, framed in geometric floral and trellis patterns, and mother-of-pearl enamel interspersed among them. Another perennial Bulgari classic, the Parentesi – which finds its inspirations from San Petrini blocks typical of Roman alleyways – manifests itself as an abstract speckled pattern on the Parentesi sunglasses’ acetate bodies.

The classic Serpenti was first derived from jewellery then transposed to watches. The scales on the elegant hand-crafted enamel snake’s head clasp on the flap is individually and laboriously enameled to achieve the desired colour, then blown numerous times before being set. Helming the clasp on its sides are hardy onyx studs, framed in gold, then nestled into the leather. The Serpenti Scaglie tote ups the ante and glamour with a statement handle: scale-like ornamentation resembles tiny flowers on the precipice of bloom, forming double handles.

Crown JewelBulgari-Serpenti

The crowning glory to the accessories lineup is the limited-edition Serpenti Forever bag. The lavish bag is crafted from python skin and painted in jewel tones inspired by a 1968 necklace – the same one Keira Knightley wore to the Oscars in 2006 – from the Bulgari archives. The skin is printed and hand-polished, creating a textural harmony and contrast between the rough scales and the painterly effects. Each bag requires three months to create, and there are only 68 of these beauties in the world.

6 Designer Sunglasses for Spring/Summer 2016

With the summer sun upon us, intense light is a further burden to those of us already braving the heat. Spring/Summer 2016 eyewear collections have elegant and innovative designer shades on offer, allowing one to stay fashionable and comfortable, without having to squint all day long.

Offering up a big dollop of high-glitz glamor, Jimmy Choo’s Vivy shades feature round nude colored or gloss black acetate frames with Swarovski crystals as decoration. As an added plus, the jewels are fully detachable, allowing you to adapt your style for any scenario.

With the geek chic aesthetic brought back into vogue by the likes of brands like Gucci, Tom Ford has decided to tap into that with the Greta model. These shades sport thick geometric frames in retro inspired colors such as ‘transparent pink’ and ‘honey/brown’.

Fendi takes a leap into the future with its Eye Shine collection, yet still holding within it a bit of the retro vibe. Ingeniously featuring a ‘frame within a frame’, these round glasses have a 1970s color scheme of golden yellows and turquoise blues, but have a cat’s-eye silhouette.

On the other side of the spectrum, Moncler went all the way back to the 1950s with a stylized range of butterfly shaped lenses in pastel colors like taupes, corals, and mint greens. All perfect for a laid back feminine vibe.

The ultra-modern Chanel went for style blended with technology by having a flat-mirrored eye-mask/visor like design engraved with laser padding. This Plein Soleil 2016 line uses colors subtly based on acetate to allow for slipping back and forth from black to blue on a solar cat’s eye, or from black to white on an oval optic.

Finally, we take a look at Cartier. Popularly known as aviators, the Panthére de Cartier features the Maison’s emblematic panther making an unexpected appearance in the lens. The three-dimensional jeweled panther is completed in gold or platinum with black lacquer, much like most of the eyewear. Choose between a golden flash or graduated grey lenses with silver toned reflections for a sleek and polished look under the sun.

Eyeglasses convert to sunglasses upon command

A new type of eyeglass lens that rapidly darkens when you want it to, is soon to become a reality, according to researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US.

There are considerable limitations to the transitional, or photochromic lenses currently on the market, which fail to darken inside cars or under baseball caps. Furthermore many brands let the harmful rays seep through.

It also takes time for them to clear up when the sun disappears, which poses inherent safety implications.

A small electrical charge adds the magic touch to the Georgia Tech research team’s new development, which switches from clear to dark and back again in seconds, enabling the capacity for fine color tuning.

Any color in the entire range of hues in which sunglasses are commercially available is possible, according to the researchers, who say their method could be easily applied for retail versions.

Their paper was published in the journal American Chemical Society Applied Materials & Interfaces.
