Following the announcement that Marilyn Monroe is the icon of the upcoming 65th Cannes Film Festival, event sponsor Chopard has designed a one-off creation to be worn by one lucky celebrity — whose identity won’t be unveiled until May 16.

The late Hollywood actress famously sung about diamonds being a girl’s best friend, so for this year a necklace of heart-shaped diamonds and briolettes designed by Chopard’s co-president Caroline Scheufele will be revealed.

A spokesperson for the house told The Telegraph that it will be worn by “a glamorous woman as she glides up the famous red-carpeted staircase.” The wearer will be revealed on day one of the film event, which runs May 16 – 27.

Stars to have impressed with their jewelry choices at last year’s opening ceremony include actress Vahina Giocante in Jaeger-LeCoultre and model Karolina Kurkova in Cartier, although an obvious choice would be Michelle Williams, who portrayed Monroe in Oscar-nominated biopic My Week with Marilyn.

Meanwhile, Chopard is also planning an exhibition of 25 unpublished photographs of Monroe taken by US photographer Milton Greene during the festival, which is also set to tour worldwide with more details to be revealed at a later date.
