Paris, Unscripted: The Villa Saint James Experience

Located in the 16th arrondissement, Villa Saint James offers four serviced apartments with access to hotel-standard luxury amenities.

There are two kinds of men in Paris: those who pretend they came for the culture and those who know perfectly well they came for the wine, the bread and the fantasy that they might accidentally become more interesting simply by existing within the city limits. I arrived firmly in the second category.

Discovering the Slightly Ridiculous Magic of Villa Saint James

Tucked away in the stately 16th arrondissement, just beside the quietly grand Saint James Paris, sits the rather seductive Villa Saint James. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately begin planning how to casually mention it to people later, preferably while wearing sunglasses indoors. The villa contains four serviced apartments, each with its own outdoor space. In Paris, where most terraces are roughly the size of a yoga mat, this already feels like winning the lottery.

Parisian Elegance, But Make It Comfortable

The interiors were designed by Laura Gonzalez, who seems to understand that the ideal Parisian fantasy involves chandeliers, velvet and just enough modern comfort to stop you complaining. Each apartment strikes a delicate balance between impressively chic hotel and effortlessly stylish friend’s apartment — the sort of friend who somehow always has vintage armchairs and never seems stressed about rent. It is luxurious without being intimidating, which is good news for those of us who still panic slightly around decorative cushions.

The Apartments (Or, Where a Man Pretends to Live Like a Novelist)

Lamoureux Apartment

Perched on the top floor, Lamoureux is the romantic option. There is a bedroom tucked beneath the eaves, which makes you feel like a mildly tortured writer even if the only thing you have written recently is a bar tab. Step onto the private terrace and you’ll get sweeping views of the château-like Saint James Paris next door. It is the kind of view that makes you consider buying a silk dressing gown.

Victor Hugo Apartment

The Victor Hugo apartment comes with two bedrooms, private bathrooms and a garden view. It is named, presumably, after Victor Hugo, which immediately lends your stay a certain literary credibility — even if the only dramatic prose you produce is a WhatsApp message about croissants. From the windows, one can admire the Parisian rooftops and feel very sophisticated about it.

Longchamp Apartment

Longchamp is for those leaning fully into the good life. It has a generous living room, a winter garden and views over the villa’s private garden. It is calm, charming and dangerously conducive to long afternoons involving cheese, wine and absolutely no plans. In other words this is Paris in its purest form.

The Perks (Because of Course There Are Perks)

Staying at Villa Saint James means one can get access to everything at Saint James Paris, including the Michelin-starred restaurant Bellefeuille and the rather indulgent Guerlain Spa. There is also a dedicated Villa Manager whose job is essentially to ensure you live your best Parisian life. Need a table? Done. Want something arranged? The level of service ensures every need is anticipated and met, so guests can focus entirely on the experience.

The Verdict

You can book a single apartment or the entire villa — enough space for twelve adults and several children, though frankly it feels like the sort of place better suited to a group of friends determined to behave slightly badly in a very elegant setting. That is the real charm of Villa Saint James — it offers the fantasy that, for a few days at least, you are not just visiting Paris. You are living in the midst of this incredibly dynamic city.

Paris’ quieter luxury experiences are equally reflected in the city’s evolving approach to menswear. In a recent conversation with Antoine Salmon of RIVES Paris, LUXUO explored how bespoke tailoring is being elevated for a modern generation of gentlemen seeking sartorial elegance.
