Drawn on Starbucks Cups

Soo Min Kim places Starbucks mermaid in a series of bizarre scenes

Oct 18, 2014 | By Staff Writer

Ever wonder what to do with your used Starbucks cup? Seoul-based artist Soo Min Kim sees the Starbucks cup as a canvas, and the Starbucks mermaid as his muse. Instead of tossing away his coffee cup, he hand paints and draws whimsical landscapes and scenes onto the cup, making the mermaid the subject in the scenes. He has turned his illustrations of countless scenes into an entire series with some bizarre situations- a pregnant mermaid smoking and punching a man on the train and, another, an obese mermaid eating at a fast food restaurant. He only uses white paint and a green marker to complete his illustrations. Its humourous to see the starbucks mermaid, an iconic trademark, brought to life by being portrayed as all these characters, whether real or fictional. By adopting such humble and inexpensive materials to do his work, the artist shows the accessibility of such innovative projects, inspiring others to liberate their own ideas in a similar manner. Try it out the next time youre waiting for someone at Starbucks!
