Day 1 of BaselWorld 2016 brought the first reports of the most anticipated of all highlights – a new Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. Basically, Cerachrom makes its debut as the bezel of the iconic chronograph. Collectors will recall that this monobloc Cerachrom bezel is an exclusive development at Rolex, with a patent and everything, and is already in use in the GMT Master II from 2013, to name just one other model. It is described as “virtually impervious to scratches” and is impervious to UV degradation of its color. As usual, the numerals and markings on this bezel are enhanced by a platinum coating, applied via PVD. In terms of movement and size, there is no change from previous editions, being still 40mm and powered by thein-house calibre 4130. The new watch comes in two versions, one with a white lacquer dial with black snailed counters and one with a black lacquer dial with grey snailed counters. Hour markers and hands are common to both, in 18k white gold with Chromalight. Rolex says this new bezel is a tribute to the 1965 model, which had a black Plexiglas bezel insert.
