Maurice Lacroix 2020 Aikon Chronograph Skeleton is sculpturally powerful sports luxury timepiece

The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Chronograph Skeleton uses its Masterpiece mechanical calibre to great effect making it a powerful sculptural symbol of Jura watchmaking know-how

Re-introduced at Baselworld 2018, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon was an updated look at the manufacture’s vintage CalypsoĀ icon. Two years after the launch of the Aikon quartz in compelling bronze, the latest evolution of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon has seen automatic models joining the collection in a heady cocktail of mechanical movements, refreshed aesthetics and favourable price points – what resulted was unparalleled perceived value in the competitive genre of luxury sports watches. Today, a Chronograph Skeleton model joins Maurice Lacroix’s Aikon series but its no ordinary skeletonised chronograph – the introduction of this time-keeping complication comes by way of the Masterpiece series – the brand’s moniker for in-house, superlatively finishing mechanical calibres.

Powerfully Sculptural Maurice Lacroix 2020 Aikon Chronograph Skeleton

Maurice Lacroix 2020 Aikon Chronograph Skeleton is a sculptural creation that combines the iconic angular lines of the Aikon Automatic with one of Maurice Lacroixā€™s most iconic movements – its masterpiece. Since the 90ā€™s, Maurice Lacroix has been crafting skeleton watches, a delicate demonstration of watchmaking know-how, balancing practical requirements for structural rigidity with the needs of alluring open-work dial aesthetic.

On the new 2020 Aikon Chronograph Skeleton, surplus material removed using precision laser cutting, unleashing the architectural depth of the Aikon’s signature midcase and showcasing the slender framework of the beautifully decorated movement as if within a dramatic amphitheatre, thus emphasising the craftsmanship which has become synonymous with the Masterpiece name.

A follow up of the Aikon Mercury, skeletonisation of the new Aikon chronograph skeleton enhances the structure of its hands, bezel and push-pieces, by playing on sharp lines, alternating between circles and hexagons, combined with the appeal of a shaped sports-luxury watch form factor – sophisticated, graphic, iconic.

The 44 mm Aikon Chronograph Skeleton bears an elegant thickness, to it, at 15mm it’s one of the better wearing sports chronographs on the market, enhancing its aesthetic desirability while asserting the character and personality of the Aikon’s bolder design features – its experimentally expressive, much like its Mercury predecessor, highlighting the Jura manufacture’s philosophy in balancing the relationship between its objective and perceived value and its ultimate retail price point.

The composition of the 2020 Aikon Chronograph Skeleton’s bezel, flange and dial create a “vortex effect” drawing your attention to the exquisite openwork reminiscent of the Aikon Mercury, with all the markings are aligned towards the centre of the watch. The chronograph subdials themselves bear tiny sapphire discs, holding aloft the indications and complemented with blue seconds hand and signature rhodium-plated hands embellished with Superluminova.
