Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Hi-Beat SLGH027 Features Mt. Iwate Dial
Grand Seiko introduces the Evolution 9 Hi-Beat SLGH027, a timepiece that captures the serene beauty of Mt. Iwate through its striking dial design

Sublime interpretations of nature. That could very well be a tagline for Grand Seiko, which in the case of the SLGH027 we perceive in the form of a dial that channels the winter landscape of Mt Iwate in northern Honshu, Japan. Like many other dials in the same vein, this is a symbolic representation of a specific view you get from a Grand Seiko manufacture.
Mt Iwate dominates the horizon at the Shizukuishi facility in Iwate prefecture. To begin with the most important point then, the dial is what makes this new model noteworthy; all other specifications are the same as previous iterations of this Evolution 9 Hi-Beat watch.
The SLGH027’s dial draws inspiration from the ridged contours of Mt. Iwate, a significant stratovolcano complex that has not erupted since 1732, but is plenty active. Belying this activity, the new textured dial of SLGH027 captures a certain peaceful sense of Mt. Iwate as seen from the sky, with a striking light-blue hue evoking the purity of the air and water surrounding the landmark.

Unfortunately, Grand Seiko has left the creation process behind this dial a mystery, which works on an emotional level, but the geek in us seeks further information on anything noteworthy to report here…
Embodying Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 Style, the SLGH027 emphasizes beauty, legibility, and comfort. The 40mm case, with a thickness of 11.7mm, is crafted from Ever-Brilliant Steel, a high-corrosion-resistant alloy that offers a whiter sheen than traditional stainless steel. This material enhances the watch’s durability and complements the light-blue dial.
The case showcases a combination of Zaratsu polishing, delivering a distortion-free mirror finish, and delicate hairline finishes, creating a harmonious glow. The prominent, grooved indexes and robust hands ensure exceptional legibility, while the low center of gravity and well-proportioned bracelet provide a secure and comfortable fit on the wrist.

At the heart of the SLGH027 lies the Caliber 9SA5, a distinctive example of Grand Seiko’s high-beaters. Operating at 36,000 vphv (twice the speed of the Breguet reference 3358 also featured in this section, for comparison), this movement incorporates the innovative Dual Impulse Escapement and twin barrels, achieving an impressive 80-hour power reserve.
If you recognise this escapement as a significant one, congratulations because it is markedly different to most Swiss lever configurations. The movement’s finishing is inspired by the rippling waves of the Shizukuishi River; this and all other decorative details are visible through the sapphire crystal caseback.
The Grand Seiko SLGH027 will be available starting in May 2025, with a limited production of 1,200 pieces.
