Vortex

Peter Kogler blanket gallery walls with contour lines to create illusion of underground tunnel

Feb 07, 2015 | By Staff Writer

Artist Peter Kogler transforms flat, white walls into the inside of an underground tunnel. Painting the walls with complex geometric patterns, Kogler creates the illusion of a dizzying tunnel, transporting viewers through a trippy dimension. His designs employ curves and swoops that appear like a vortex, some blanketing the entire hallways of the gallery so that the people walking through can experience the full effect of Kogler’s artwork. The spatial illusions of pipes, tubes and tracks evoke a nearly claustrophobic feeling that brings to mind underground public transportation- much like riding the subway.
