More Than Violet

Julia Peirone photographs teenage girls at their most unguarded moments

Apr 16, 2014 | By Staff Writer

It may be every teenage girl’s nightmare. An unglamorous photo with mouths agape, wonky eyes and awkward hand positions. Julia Peirone’s series More Than Violet thrives on these candid and admittedly unglamorous photos of teenage girls. Taking hundreds of shots in order to get the candid in-between moments, Peirone captures these girls at their most unguarded and vulnerable. The awkward fidgeting with hair and jewellery, the uncertainty that belies confidence. It is intriguing to see these girls on the cusp of womanhood, but not quite there yet. Their faces are caked in make-up but their expressions expose the youth, inexperience and uncertainty about growing up. (via Huffington Post)
