The thought of hopping on a plane with a moment’s notice to a place that is unknown, sounds like a dream come true to most. Unfortunately, there is a lot of planning required before one sets off on such a journey. With our lovely friends at Afini, we are one step closer to jetting off to exotic locales such as Sri Lanka.

Rich in heritage and greenery, the destination is one that remains on our list of dream destinations. To enjoy what the country has to offer, Afini suggests a two-hundred-year-old residence called The Lighthouse. Built by Dutch traders, the property sits within the 16th century Galle fort. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this would be a perfect way to enjoy soak in the lush vegetation that surrounds you.

Within the property, sits a large private swimming pool that measures 30 meters as well as high arches, soaring ceilings and exposed beams. This makes it a treat for those who love design and historical architecture. Surrounded by frangipanis, the pool is situated beside the shaded ambalama veranda that serves as an ideal spot to unwind. According to Afini, the property’s alfresco dining room that seats six is quite the place to enjoy a few home-cooked local food by its very own in-house cook.

A perfect example of a home-away-from-home, The Lighthouse boasts three en-suite bedrooms with private balconies and a master suite that has its own four-poster bed. An alfresco shower and outdoor living area for nine guests are just a few other amenities that join the list.

Outside of the luxurious residence, are numerous activities that showcase the beauty of nature in Sri Lanka. Travel along the green rice fields on a bicycle and you will find Buddhist temples that go back centuries or kayak on the Koggala Lake to participate in some bird watching surrounded by cinnamon gardens. Sailing from Mirissa’s quaint harbour will bring you closer to whales and dolphins, while the Yala national park will reveal the world’s highest population of leopards and other wildlife such as elephants in Uda Walawe, that roam free. At the Fort’s cobblestone lanes, tourists will find opportunities to shop for trinkets to bring back home and dining options.
