A self-portrait by Edouard Manet sold for 22.4 million pounds ($33 million) at Sotheby’s in London on Tuesday.
It was the highest price paid for a picture by Manet. The previous record for a Manet was 16 million pounds at a sale in New York in 1989.
The oil on canvas work is in somber tones and shows the bearded artist wearing a bowler hat with a paint brush in hand.

Renowned French artist Xavier Veilhan has produced a brand new work of monochrome “sculpture” in collaboration with the Frauscher shipyard in Austria.

French trunk maker Goyard has released a book with publisher Devambez which illustrates the brand’s heritage.
The Goyard Book features more than 200 pages featuring photographs and descriptions of all the greatest achievements by Goyard since starting in 1792.
As the New York Times reports, “The book includes the history of the Goyard family — the achievements during the Paris Expo Universelle in 1900 and the creation of the noble facade of the Paris store. ”

Designer Kenzo Takada, who founded the upscale Kenzo label, has tried his hand at painting, with a Paris exhibition of eight self portraits.
The paintings shown at the Studio 55 gallery feature the designer in a series of flower-printed kimonos that recall the kinds of prints his label is known for.

A sculpted stone head by artist Amedeo Modigliani sold at Christie’s in Paris on Monday for euro 43.2 million, breaking the record for a work by the Italian artist.
The sculpture dated from between 1910 and 1912 and had been estimated at between four and six million euros.
“It’s a record for a work by the artist in any category”, including paintings and sculptures, said Christie’s, which organised the sale.

A painting by leading Indian artist Syed Haider Raza sold for almost 2.4 million pounds in London on Thursday, setting a record for a modern Indian work.
“Saurashtra”, dated 1983, was estimated to fetch between 1.3 and 1.8 million pounds, but finally sold for 2,393,250 pounds including buyers’ premium.
The painting belonged to a key period in Raza’s career when he began to integrate elements of his Indian childhood and cultural heritage into his paintings.
