It’s been a big week for the all-encompassing Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide group, with a celebration of the fact the brand now oversees more than 100 hotels in China — and the release of news that it has 100 more planned.

The growth of the group has been remarkable, considering Starwood only opened its first operation in China in 1985 — when it unveiled The Great Wall Sheraton Hotel in Beijing.

The group has so far opened 11 hotels across the country this year and has plans for 13 more before 2012 comes to an end.

Leading the way for the group is the Sheraton chain, which aims to have 90 hotels up and running in China by 2016 and will this year open hotels in the likes of Dalian, Fuzhou and Macau.

Sheraton is toasting its 75th anniversary this year with the September opening of its hotel in Macau — which will be its largest anywhere.

The Sheraton Macao Hotel, Cotai Central, will feature 3,863 rooms when finished and a grand ballroom that is the “size of over 11 basketball courts combined.”
