Paris’ famed Hôtel de Crillon – one of the finest of the luxury Paris hotels – has been put up for sale by its American owner – Starwood Capital – for about
€300 million ($420 million).

Built in 1758 as a government building after being commissioned by Louis XV, “Le Crillon” is situated near the Champs Elysées on Place de la Concorde.

Starwood has owned the Crillon since 2005. The company took on the five-star hotel as part of its €2 billion acquisition of Taittinger’s hotel and champagne empire.

Le Crillon, was converted into a hotel 100 years ago and former guests include George V, the Shah of Iran and Winston Churchill.

The Hôtel de Crillon reflects total opulence, beginning at the honey-colored marble lobby and into the adjacent gastronomic restaurant Les Ambassadeurs filled with crystal chandeliers and decorated in seven different marbles.

The hotel’s public salons are filled with 17th and 18th century tapestries, chandeliers, gilt-and-brocade furniture, fine pieces of sculpture, and Louis XVI chests and chairs.

Stars who have stayed there range from Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplin, to Mariah Carey and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
