Review: Lamima Giant Phinisi for Charter

At 65m this Indonesian phinisi-style ketch is one of the biggest charter yachts in the region

May 18, 2016 | By Staff Writer

This Indonesian phinisi-style ketch was built specifically for charter in Sulawesi by Haji Baso and Haji Saka. At 65m she is said to be the largest operational wooden sailing vessel in the region. Simply put, she is big. And very, very comfortable, not to mention luxurious. This is a yacht properly suited for long distances and voyages of exploration. On board Lamima you could retrace the steps of Wallace, sail the old routes of the Spice Trade, or dive into the glories of the Raja Ampat, the beating heart of the Coral Triangle, and reputedly the most biodiverse marine ecosystem in the world.

With four double suites and two twin cabins below, and a master suite on the main deck just behind the wheelhouse, Lamima accommodates 14 guests in sybaritic comfort. Each cabin, or suite, is spacious and elegant, and furnished around a theme of relaxed luxury in a traditional Indonesian style. Every accommodation has an en-suite bathroom, sink-in comfortable seating and extensive storage space. Bring all your swimsuits, and a whole wardrobe of resort wear!

Lamima's Spacious Decks

Lamima’s Spacious Decks

The main saloon, amidships on the main deck, is designed to be a haven of comfort and tranquility. For the more sociable occasions, it is furnished with a bar and lounge, and a dining alcove that happily seats all 14 guests.

The main deck is an expansive open area that’s tailor-made for leisure and al fresco dining. With a shade sail for when the tropical sun is a bit too much, this is where much of life on board takes place. It’s where you’ll be sharing the day’s adventures, enjoying a cocktail as the sun goes down, or dining under the stars. The “Spa Quarter” is located aft, where you can succumb to a pijit massage or any one of Lamima’s many spa treatments after a hard day’s watersports or shore explorations. Get set up for tomorrow.

There’s space for peace and quiet up in the bow where you can watch the sea go by or to curl up with a book. And if all you want to do is… nothing, then stretch out on the sun beds on the upper deck, a space “dedicated to inactivity.” We can’t imagine being any more spoilt for choice than on board Lamima.

Feeling energetic? Lamima provides jetskis, a jet tender, diving and snorkelling facilities for all 14 guests, stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, waterskiing and wakeboarding and even traditional Indonesian canoes – jukungs – for when you are tired of doing nothing. Did we mention the 5-star dining, with sumptuous meals prepared from the freshest local produce whenever possible? That’s a given on a superlative charter vessel like Lamima, along with internet and satellite communications, video and audio entertainment, and hot and cold running fun. Dedicated sailors will be delighted that Director and Owner, Dominique Gerardin, is an avid environmentalist, and Lamima minimises her carbon footprint by setting her majestic sails at every opportunity. This is truly a boat ready to take you away on the adventure of a lifetime.
