Inside Mattias Adolfsson’s Sketchbook

Detailed sketches and doodles of an illustrator’s bizarre imagined world

Oct 05, 2014 | By Staff Writer

While procrastinating, many often take to doodling and sketching faces, objects and random patterns. For freelance illustrator Mattias Adolfsson, doodling is his means of expressing his bizarre imagination. Each sketch is done created with exquisite detail and attention, exposing the vividness of the dreams and thoughts that go through the Swedish artist’s head. Its a strange collection of stories involving robots, machines, funky spaceships and other whimsical creatures and settings you would expect from a “futurama” storyboard. His recent sketches centre around nature-including a whimsical looking tree with many leaves and branches, that also have houses within the trunk. Its an extremely complex world that is outlined using only a pen and paintbrush to fill in some color. His book, The second in line, which featured a collection of illustrations from his sketchbooks, won “Most Beautiful Swedish Book” in 2014.

Adolfsson has prints and other artwork available for sale on Etsy. Learn more about the artist and his outlandish sketches here.
