Amateur treasure hunter finds $50,000 bejewelled cross

A treasure hunter has struck gold, after his metal detector guided him to a rare Anglo-Saxon cross in the middle of a muddy farmer's field.

The stunning pure gold artefact was set with red gemstones and dates from the 7th century. It may have originally held a relic such as bone from a Disciple or fragment of the Cross.

Measuring just over an inch long, the finely decorated 18 carat gold is worth at least £25,000 ($50,000). The red stones are among the world's most ancient gems and were used by ancient Greeks .

The anonymous finder discovered the 1,400-year-old cross just 12 inches beneath the sod on a farm in Nottinghamshire. He handed the find to a coroner who declared it as treasure trove at an inquest. This means the finder will get half the proceeds of a sale. He is likely to split his earnings with the farmer.

The new Centigraphe by F.P. Journe : 360,000 km/h at your fingertips !

The F.P. Journe Centigraphe Souverain is a pretty incredible piece of haute horlogerie. a first and foremost the creme de la creme of chronographs.

"Perhaps you have super-human reflexes and would like to measure the speed of an asteroid caroming through the atmosphere?" With the Centigraphe, you can do that, thanks to an exceptional manually wound chronograph movement

This complex mechanism features three subdials, each of which are marked with a time scale, and a tachymeter. Triggering the rocker switch on the right side of the watch sets the hands into motion–at this moment, the immediate attention getter is the red foudroyante “flying-seconds” hand at left, which travels around its scale once each second;

Combined with the tachometer scales, being able to measure intervals of 1/100th second makes it theoretically possible to time something moving at 360,000 kilometers per hour! Even though your reflexes most likely won’t be able to take advantage of that, it’s nonetheless quite the fascinating feature.

The world's most expensive champagne glasses

The Daily (Australia) has reported that an Australian jeweler recently unveiled what he says are the world's most expensive champagne glasses, valued at $400,000 and blinged out with 1700 white and pink diamonds.

Designer John Calleija said five jewellers spent more than three months finishing the two glasses, which were chiselled from huit kilogram blocks of crystal.
Each glass stands 15cm tall, weighs 250g, and together encrusted with 15 carats of white diamonds and six carats of rare argyle pink diamonds.
They are finished with platinum 18 carat white and rose gold.

Mr Calleija said he was experimenting with his designs when he came up with the idea, but it just as easily could have been a pair of diamond-encrusted chopsticks. "I just wanted to get into a different area of objects, like luxury goods. I drew a whole series of diamond-encrusted letter openers, salt and pepper shakers, scissors, everything... But I drew the glasses and there was just something about them."

The buyer, an anonymous Melbourne businessman, vowed to put the glasses to good use, promising to bust them out for special occasions and to turn them into cherished family heirlooms.

The glasses, which will head to London for the official opening of Mr Calleija's second store, were the pride and joy of his team : "Tears were coming from their eyes because they know how much this has been a labour of love".

Onassis Jewelry Sale

A diamond necklace that used to belong to Christina Onassis, daughter of Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis, sold at auction on Wednesday for $7.1 million.

Christina Onassis was the only daughter of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who went on to marry JF Kennedy's widow Jacqueline.
She lived a life of luxury, but there was tragedy too, as she lost both her parents and a brother within the space of two years. Christina died in 1987 of a heart attack. She was just 37 years old.
Her jewelery collection was put on sale by her daughter Athina.

The auction also included the so-called Faberge Buddha which sold for $2.5 million : This was a jade-colored Buddha by Peter Carl Faberge, renowned for creating ornamental eggs for Russia's imperial family.
