With 57 restaurants winning stars in this year’s Michelin guide, New York comes in only at fifth place in world rankings, but is the hands-down number one for culinary diversity.

The 2011 New York guide, which precedes all the other city surveys due this year, sees the Big Apple with 10 two-star restaurants, up four from last year, and an unchanged five with the maximum of three stars.

Three French eateries keep their places in the highest ratings: Jean Georges, Daniel, and Le Bernardin, as do the Japanese Masa, and California chef Thomas Keller’s Per Se.

Ferran Adria to open new eatery in Barcelona

World-renowned Spanish chef Ferran Adria on Friday announced he would open a new restaurant in Barcelona with his brother, although it would be less sophisticated than his emblematic eatery ElBulli.

“There will be a place to eat by Ferran and Albert Adria in Barcelona,” he told the TV3 channel in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region.

The new establishment with his brother, a pastry chef, “will be a place to go with friends,” the avant-garde chef said. He gave no indication when it would open.

But he said it will have little in common with elBulli, which Adria announced earlier this year is to close in 2012 and then reopen as a non-profit foundation in 2014.

Boisdale, a central London restaurant, is offering what it claims is the world’s most expensive omelette, a £90 ($135) dish made from gulls’ eggs.

The eggs, which have beautiful mottled green-grey shell, are slightly bigger than a hen’s egg and need to be collected from gulls’ nests by 25 licensed traders.

Only about 40,000 gulls’ eggs are sold each year, with most collected from estates owned by wealthy families.

France’s gastronomic establishment on Wednesday reacted with outrage to an upmarket British restaurant guide that excluded French eateries from its top10 list

The list by the magazine Restaurant, published on Monday, named the 50 top tables in the world chosen by 800 international critics, and included the Parisian bistro Chateaubriand plus several other eateries of French chefs.

But there were no French restaurants in the top 10, in which the title of best in the world went to chef Rene Redzepi’s restaurant Noma in Copenhagen.
