Rolex has recently revealed two bespoke instruments specially developed and manufactured for Bloodhound SSC, the supersonic car gunning to set a new World Land Speed Record of 1000mph (1609.34km/h).

The instruments are a speedometer and a chronograph respectively, with Rolex’s signature analogue dials, and will be installed within Bloodhound’s cockpit on the sides of the dashboard to flank its central electronic displays. They will provide a visual reference and also act as independent backups for Andy Green, the Bloodhound’s driver, in the critical areas of acceleration, precision braking from 1000mph, and timekeeping during the turnaround phase between the two mandatory record runs.

The project aims to fully assemble Bloodhound by mid-2015 and make its record attempt in 2016 in South Africa, in order to inspire the next generation to take up careers in science and technology. According to Arnaud Boetsch, Communication and Image Director of Rolex, the project is of strong interest to the brand given its nature and global appeal, and its “strong symbolic value” and Rolex’s past associations in the world of speed make the partnership with Bloodhound SSC “a natural fit”. Likewise, Mr Green has opined that Rolex’s technical and engineering expertise, makes it “the perfect partner” for the project, “both from a technical and inspirational point of view”.

This isn’t Rolex’s first association with the project – the brand joined the project in 2011 as its official timing partner.
