Fastest Ever: Brabus 850 Biturbo Cabrio

If we know anything at all about Brabus, it is that Brabus cars are either fast or powerful…well more than likely they are both, as is the case with the 850 6.0 Biturbo Cabrio. The Internet, the blogosphere and the Thunderdome are all abuzz because this not-so-gentle giant might be the fastest road-legal four-seat convertible in the world. This is no showhorse either because it is both real and is really for sale.

How fast, exactly? The German tuning firm says that the car, based on a Mercedes S 63 Cabriolet can hit 350km/h (that’s 217mph for the metrically challenged). That makes slowpokes out of the Audi R8, Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible, Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, Ferrari 488 Spider, McLaren 650S Spider and any series production Lamborghini other than an Aventador. Even the Aventador is merely equal to the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo Cabrio because both top out at 350km/h.

But as well as mph there is an immense amount of bhp on offer too. The car’s twin-turbo 6-liter V8 produces 625kW, that’s 850hp or 838bhp plus an epic 1450Nm of torque, accessible from as little as 2,500rpm.

All of those performance stats working in harmony equate to a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds, a 0-200km/h time of 9.4 seconds and, so claims Brabus, an electronically limited top speed. The tires of the 850 6.0 Biturbo Cabrio can’t handle more than 350km/h, even if the rest of the car can.

To achieve those sorts of numbers, Brabus has had to almost completely rebuild the Mercedes’ stock V8: increasing capacity to almost 6 liters from 5.5. Adding its own turbochargers, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods and even re-machining the cylinder heads to ensure the biggest bang possible with the least possible waste on every revolution.

The engine also breathes better thanks to new intake manifold, exhaust and bigger air filter boxes. The finishing touch is real gold in the engine bay for heat shielding the turbos’ intake and charge-air pipes.

The exterior has needed some serious aerodynamic upgrades to reduce drag and to ensure it stays on the road rather than entering a near-Earth orbit when approaching top speed. They include a new lower front spoiler, larger side air intakes and a redesigned rear air diffuser. All of which have been wind-tunnel developed, made from carbon fiber, and will be made available to S Class owners who want to improve or individualize the look of their cars without the total engineering overhaul.

However, like with all things Brabus, despite the incredible retuning, the 850 6.0 BiTurbo Cabrio comes with a three-year, 100,000km warranty.

Fun Squared: Mercedes G550 SUV

It seems only days ago that we brought you news of the Mercedes G350 d but we have another very impressive G-Wagen to show you, the G550 SUV. Seriously, this monster of a car doesn’t even look like a car and it is most affectionately known as a ‘wagon’ believe it or not. Capitalizing on the massive (pardon the pun) appeal of the SUV in the United States, the G550 4×4² is coming stateside. Briefly, the G550 4×4² is an off-roader that stands 2.25 meters tall and 2.1 meters wide and, in the eloquent words of the AFP, it has a ground clearance greater than the average toddler.

When it goes on sale in early 2017 don’t expect to get much change from $250,000 but do expect to get noticed, no matter where the road leads. The car’s gargantuan proportions are certain to attract attention but they’re the result of fitting it with portal axles.

On a normal car and even on a normal SUV, the axles – front and rear – are perfectly in line with the centers of the wheels they drive, because the wheels are fitted to them and the axles to the engine via a transmission.

That means that ground clearance – what you can drive over without hearing the sound of metal crunching and bending – is dictated by wheel size and wheel size alone because that height dictates the level of the axle.

Even a monster truck has to use immense, oversized wheels to overcome this problem. Axles and wheels being in line also reduces what the suspension can do in terms of how much or how far the body can move to overcome an obstacle.

Portal axles eradicate all of these problems by breaking this union. A series of gears send the power down from the axles above (at engine height) to the wheels below.

This remarkable piece of engineering means the car has a 51.6° approach and 43.8° departure angle (a normal G-Class can only manage 30°) and a fording depth of 1 meter. It also means that for the uninitiated at least, it will seem like someone’s allowed a monster truck on the road.

It won’t quite have the grunt of Big Foot. The G550 4×4² will run on normal pump gas for starters and that fuel will be running through a 4-liter biturbo V8 engine good for 416hp and 450 lb-ft of torque that will run to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The car will also come with a satnav as standard, but with such an elevated driving position, owners should have no problem seeing the route ahead even without it.

Off-Road Warrior: Mercedes G 350 d Professional

While Mercedes has been making cars more suited for the urban explorer, they’ve not forgotten those with a more Indiana Jones kind of spirit. The Mercedes G 350 d Professional is the latest version of their iconic G Wagon and it is all fitted out for maneuvering through the harshest conditions and terrain – whilst still maintaining a certain level of passenger comfort.

In terms of its performance, the Professional will be sporting a 3-liter turbocharged V6 diesel engine under its castellated hood, with 245hp on tap and, most importantly, 600Nm of torque available from as little as 1,600 rpm. Beyond that, this new model sports permanent all-wheel-drive, a low-ratio transmission and three electronically locking differentials.

With specs like that, it is clear Mercedes intends for you to go on as rocky and as unstable ground as you can get. The Professional completes its encouragement by being hard to tarnish – with grille and wheels finished in matte black rather than easy-to-scratch chrome, and also chunky all-terrain tires as standard. The suspension, too, has been overhauled to give it an extra 10mm of ground clearance (245mm versus the standard 235mm), and that in turn results in an improved angle of approach (36˚) and a 600mm fording depth (because with this G Wagon, of course fording will be something you’ll get up to). All in all, this is an exciting step up from the now discontinued G 300 CDI.

As for the interior, with its electronically operated seats, a multi-function steering wheel and optional compatibility with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, you can expect yourself to still have access to your entertainment in the wildest countries. Just in case, though, the floor is clad in non-slip mats and there are drainage ports so that dirt from muddy boots and clothes can be easily washed away.

What about those who are G-class fans simply because of it is a luxury SUV with serious utilitarian chic? Don’t worry about it – the rest of the range is also being updated with the latest Mercedes infotainment, navigation and communication systems. With all that, the price for the Professional (in Europe) will start from €90,636.35. You can book your orders now, and European deliveries commence in September.

Mercedes-Benz Introduces Luxury Motor Yacht

Mercedes-Benz may not be the first to have been the first to unveil the first-ever luxury motor yacht — we’re looking at you Aston Martin and Bugatti — but the German automaker is making a splash nevertheless. The Arrow460-Granturismo was presented to the world in Côte d’Azur, France.

The 14-meter long ‘silver arrow of the seas’ is the perfect blend of what motor and boating fans look for. With a 960 horsepower (706 kW), the yacht brings the performance of Mercedes-Benz sports cars with the unique innovations of the boating industry. This move to areas outside the automotive industry is another chapter in the brand’s expansion.

Commenting on the debut of the “Arrow460–Granturismo,” Silver Arrows Marine Chairman Ron Gibbs said: “Almost everything about Arrow460-Granturismo is unique, from its concept to the smallest bespoke detail. It is a motor yacht with a personality that truly embraces life, combining the best marine engineering with the inspired innovations and elegance that the world associates with the Mercedes-Benz name. By merging marine and automotive worlds, with their respective design language, technologies and ideas, we have created a new standard of motor yacht, unlike all others.”

Slick Hammer: Mercedes AMG GT S

Replacing a well-loved leader is never easy, but that is the task that the Mercedes-AMG GT S will have to do, as it takes the place of the iconic Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, a car that cemented the AMG name once and for all as a bona fide performance badge.

But it is a job that the AMG GT S does well, and it proves again that Mercedes-Benz is ready to push AMG to the next level. The AMG GT S follows its predecessor in being fully designed and developed solely by the AMG brand, and this two-door two-seater proudly takes its place at the top of the Mercedes-Benz range, being the Stuttgart carmaker’s flagship sports car model.

Unlike the SLS AMG however, which was a brute force of a car designed to pummel rivals into submission with its muscular power, the AMG GT S take a slicker approach to things. The new car is smaller, and is now targetted at that other icon from across Stuttgart town, the Porsche 911. This is demonstrated by its dimensions, with the AMG GT S both shorter and lower than the SLS AMG, giving it a taut look that helps it assert a rather intimidating stance. The dramatic gull-wing doors are now absent too, replaced by regular-looking items on the AMG GT S.

Things have been downsized under the bonnet as well, with the AMG GT S now sporting a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine. Sure, it is not quite the sledgehammer that is the previous car’s monster 6.3-litre V8, but that doesn’t mean that the AMG GT S is incapable of rattling your senses. The handcrafted powerplant churns out a hefty 503bhp and 650Nm of torque, which is still enough to send you rocketing from 0-100km/h in a mere 3.8 seconds, and continue to a dizzying top speed of 310km/h, enough to get you into plenty of trouble with the authorities.

And you do this while cocooned in a snug and sporty interior that has been designed to let you know in no uncertain terms that this car means business. The suede-covered steering wheel complements the plush leather upholstery, and the car is assembled with precision Teutonic quality, as you’d expect from Stuttgart’s best. Sporty metal bits such as the pedals add further to the occasion.

As the highlight of Mercedes-AMG’s range, the AMG GT S proves to be absolutely deserving of its place at the top. All hail the new king, slimmer, trimmer but equally powerful and exciting as before. Business as usual for AMG then.

6 Stars of New York Auto Show

New York’s International Auto Show opened to the public last Friday, March 25, 2016, and a few pieces caught our eye, courtesy of the wire services. Now, the buzz happens to be about the rechargeable Toyota Prius but for us, we are invigorated by the Mercedes GLC Coupé and the spectacular Audi R8 Spyder. In terms of performance vehicles, a couple of models from brands we don’t normally follow caught our eye. We are thinking of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Nissan GT-R.

Loaded with a 540hp V10 engine promising 0 to 62mph (0 to 100km/h) acceleration in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 198mph (318km/h), the new-generation Audi R8 Spyder caused a sensation at the New York show. It’s expected to land in Europe from September 2016.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 2016

General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which comes with a 640hp V8 engine and a choice of six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic gearboxes. Surprisingly, the American automaker hasn’t yet announced performances for this car, which is due to land before the end of 2016. A convertible version, also presented at the New York event, should be available in early 2017.

Mazda MX-5 RF 2016

In a worldwide premiere, the Mazda MX-5 RF showed off an automatically retracting roof and rear window, and a new color finish called “Machine Gray.” It should be available in autumn in Europe, in a gasoline version with manual or automatic transmission.

Daimler presented the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé at the New York event, billed as a cross between a functional SUV and a sports coupé, with a sleek, sporty, off-roader design and a stylish interior. The GLC Coupé is set to land in eight different versions, including gas and diesel options. A rechargeable hybrid version is expected towards the end of 2016.

The Mini Clubman All 4 has a lighter build and gets all-wheel drive, promising improved handling, a more comfortable ride in the larger cockpit, and a special mode for boosted efficiency. It’s expected to land in dealerships in the springtime.

The 2017 version of the Nissan GT-R supercar gets a 570hp V6 biturbo engine. It also has a new chrome-finished V-shaped front grille and a redesigned trunk promising increased stability and holding at high speeds, particularly at the front of the car. It’ll be available from summer 2016, with trims including a “Gentleman Edition” with a leather interior.

The New York International Auto Show runs March 25 to April 3, 2016.

Mercedes Maybach S-Guard is Bulletproof

For James Bond wannabes (and cartel bosses, most likely), the Mercedes Maybach S-Guard is the first civilian vehicle ever to achieve a VR10 ballistic protection rating. In fact, Germany’s own Federal Office of Criminal Investigation has fully approved of its use after testing. This inconspicuous but hardy limousine looks just like any other Maybach S 600 making it well suited to cover any VIP in need of protection.

But anyone wishing to don the mantle of 007 wants to have all the safety, as well as the style. The S-Guard aims to please. At 470,000 Euros (before taxes), you can get reclining rear seats, the softest leathers and an optional drinks chiller cabinet optimized for champagne (what else). While sipping your tipple of choice, you can expect protection from “hardened steel core bullets fired from an assault rifle” (thus the VR10 rating). RPG you ask? This defender laughs in the face of the question. Seriously, for a higher rating of protection, clients would need to consider non-civilian modes of transport – like a tank.

Yet everyone knows that bad guys have many ways of getting at their targets. Don’t worry because you, as the owner of the S-Guard, are shielded. Any of those pesky explosive charges snuck underneath are fended off by the entire underbody being shaped and armored. Even the fuel-tank is reinforced with some sort of self-healing coating (reportedly the same as used in the Apache assault helicopter). Run-flat tires and a very powerful engine (6-liter V12 with 500+ horses) helps you to a clean getaway in case you’re outnumbered and under fire.

For now, you can expect this stealthy and comfortable juggernaut to be favored by Heads of State, undercover agents and Martin Shkreli. Oh yes, on that note about crime bosses who might have an eye on this model, Mercedes says it will screen all prospective buyers to avoid just such a scenario.

Ferrari Berlinetta Drives to Top Lot at Bonhams

British auction house Bonhams is gearing up for the sale of classic cars and motorbikes at the Grand Palais museum this Thursday, February 4. In its sixth year, the auction is expected to fetch millions of dollars where German and Italian models may garner the highest bids. Listed with the highest valuation as the top lot is the 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Berlinetta. Those looking to own a model that was developed closely by Enzo Ferrari himself can expect to begin their bid at $2.7 million.

Joining the Ferrari, is the Mercedes- Benz CLK GTR Coupé from 2000 ($2 million), a 1990 Ferrari F40 Berlinetta ($1 million), a 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider with a hardtop ($980,000), a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT ($870,000), and a 1937 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300B Berlinette ($810,000).

Next in line comes a 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ2 Coda Tronca Coupé ($650,000 to €870,000), then a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 Series IV Coupé ($487,000 to $700,000), a 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Berlinette Coda Ronda ($490,000 to $700,000) and a 2002 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina ($490,000 to $600,000).

Among other curiosities, auction-goers will have the chance to bid for a 1967 Citroën DS21 Cabriolet Le Caddy ($270,000 to $380,000) and a 1971 Mercedes 280 SE 3.5l Coupé once owned by Lino Ventura ($98,000 to $130,000).

A total of 250 lots will be up for auction, with 133 cars and 54 motorbikes, including 18 rare Italian motorbikes from the Stockholm Motorbike Museum in Sweden. All of the vehicles for sale will be on show at the Grand Palais exhibition center in Paris on Wednesday, February 3, from 9 am to 5:30 pm and on Thursday, February 4, from 9 am.

40 for Detroit: New Models Galore at Auto Show

Forget the winter chill: the mood at the Detroit auto show is expected to be bubbling with merriment when carmakers riding high on record US sales reveal their latest wares to the world January 16. We are especially interested in offerings from Mercedes, Porsche and, of all things, Hyundai and Buick!

“The industry is truly firing on all cylinders, and that will be reflected at this year’s show,” said Paul Sabatini, chairman of the North American International Auto Show, also known as the Detroit auto show or Detroit motor show as we are tagging it here.

More than 40 new vehicles will vie for the attention of over 5,000 journalists from dozens of countries during two days of official press previews.

“There are certainly important vehicles there,” Jack Nerad, an analyst with Kelly Blue Book, said in a telephone interview.


Volvo S90 at Detroit

Chrysler will be unveiling the next generation of its Town and Country minivan while General Motors will reveal its China-made Buick Envision sport utility vehicle. The Buick Avista has already stolen the spotlight ahead of the show and we will be following up with more this model, if it is up our alley.

This is a nice bridge to news that we like very much: lots of activity on the high end. Mercedes will be trying to steal the spotlight by revealing its new E class luxury sedan at a party.

The luxury market is reported to be crowded, with an all-new Porsche 911 Turbo set to debut alongside Volvo’s new S90 premium sedan, Ford’s much-anticipated updated Lincoln Continental and fresh models from BMW and Infiniti. Yes BMW has more to reveal, even after CES in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Korea’s Hyundai is hoping to replicate the success of Japanese rivals Toyota, Honda and Nissan by introducing a separate luxury brand, Genesis.

Technology will take center stage, said Joe Wiesenfelder, executive editor of Cars.com. Given that the biggest forward leaps in terms of consumer technology have already been revealed at CES, we are not looking for new developments, just more of the same. In other words, look for more semi-autonomous features.

Press previews were held this week at Detroit’s convention center. The show opens to the public on January 16 and 800,000 people are expected to attend by the time it closes on January 24.

130 Ways to Celebrate 130 Years of Mercedes

The new Mercedes-AMG S63 4Matic Cabriolet “Edition 130” will be limited to 130 examples worldwide. This is quite a change of pace for a firm that sold close to 2 billion cars in 2014 and by all indications, when the final numbers are in, will have raced past that count in 2015. The new limited edition was unveiled at the North American International Autoshow (aka the Detroit Motor Show) and is meant to celebrate the history and heritage of the company, as well as its reputation for making superlative cars. That said, strap yourself in and get ready for a bit of a history lesson.

In 1885 Karl Benz developed the first vehicle – a three-wheeler – powered by his internal combustion engine and a year later Gottlieb Daimler independently debuted his own gas engine four-wheel car. And although both innovators initially set out with their own businesses to sell automobiles to the public, by 1926 those businesses had joined forces to become Daimler-Benz, Mercedes-Benz’s parent.

“The first automobiles from Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler were open vehicles. Mercedes-AMG honors this achievement of the founding fathers with this highly exclusive cabriolet, and demonstrates the developments the automobile has undergone in the last 130 years, developments which would have been inconceivable at that time,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

To ensure the car stands out from all other S-Class cabriolets, it will feature a special high-gloss silver paint finish chosen to pay homage to the firm’s racing heritage. The fabric folding roof will also be finished in red, an option unavailable on any other production Mercedes drop top.


The seats are finished in Bengal red and black Nappa Leather and exclusive carbon fiber and piano black veneers adorn the console and door panels. An engraved steering wheel bezel and a prominently placed plaque on the center console indicate that the car is both a special edition and record which number in the 130-model run it represents.

And that’s just the start. Aware that truly limited edition cars very quickly become collectible, each example will come with its own tailor-made embroidered car cover, and every example will be handed over personally to its owner along with a Welcome package, which will include a special key for the vehicle and an aluminum box in which to keep it safe.

But with a 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8 under its hood, an output of 577bhp to all four wheels and a 0-100km/h time of 3.8 seconds, it will be a true shame if these cars are put into storage rather than being used for their intended purpose – a celebration of the automobile.

Luxury Carmakers Cheer Brilliant 2015 Finish

Even as prices at the pump hold steady at low rates, the premium segment of the auto industry is popping the champagne after an historic 2015. Over the course of last year, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo and McLaren have all set or are anticipating new sales records. Aside from sales, Ferrari is celebrating its independence and Hyundai is dropping in on the luxury market with the Genesis badge.

For McLaren, a supercar company that’s only been in business for five years, 2015 is the second year in succession that it’s broken the previous year’s record. Even though each model it produces is hand assembled, it delivered 1654 cars this year.

Demand is such that the company is introducing a night shift. “This accelerated development has led to yet another record year, with unprecedented levels of demand for all of our cars, especially the new Sports Series, for which we are currently holding more than six months worth of orders,” said CEO, Mike Flewitt.

Jaguar Land Rover has also enjoyed a bumper 2015, selling 487,065 vehicles – a 5% jump on 2014. “Customer response has been extremely positive, resulting in record retails across UK, North America and Europe. The appeal of our Jaguars and Land Rovers has also been recognized through over 95 global awards in 2015, including 15 for the Land Rover Discovery Sport and 19 for the Jaguar XE alone. 2016 promises to be another exciting year,” Andy Goss, Jaguar Land Rover Group Sales Operations Director, said.

Despite being implicated in the Volkswagen dieselgate scandal, Audi exceeded even its own lofty expectations – selling 1.8 million cars globally and for the first time crossed the 200,000-vehicle mark in the US where it can’t build SUVs quick enough to keep up with demand.

“2015 has proved that Audi is solidly on track and that we are able to master a year that presented various challenges very successfully,” Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG, said.

Meanwhile Volvo sold more than 500,000 cars for the first time in its history. “I am delighted to report that 2015 was a year of record sales,” said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive. “Now, with a successful 2015 behind us, Volvo is about to enter the second phase of its global transformation. Once completed, Volvo will have ceased being a minor automotive player and taken its position as a truly global premium car company.”

Cadillac is also reenergized. After years of struggling to compete, it saw a 7.5% growth in global sales. “This creates a strong foundation for our two all-new products launching in the first half of 2016 — the CT6 prestige sedan and the XT5 luxury crossover,” stated Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen.

Mercedes and BMW remain the popular premium automotive brands to beat. Mercedes clocked up sales of 1.872 million vehicles globally, a 13.4% jump on 2014. “We anticipate additional sales impetus in 2016 from the new E-Class, the world’s most intelligent business saloon,” explained board member Ola Källenius.

BMW has yet to reveal full results from 2015 but the firm had already experienced a record 2014, selling more than 2 million vehicles globally; the Munich-based automaker passed the 2 million mark in November last, the first time it has ever done that by that point in the year. “The steady sales growth we’ve shown throughout the year so far reflects the great new products we currently have on the market,” commented Dr Ian Robertson, member of the board of management of BMW AG responsible for sales and marketing BMW.

Sneak Peek: Mercedes-AMG Cabriolet

German automaker Mercedes is set to lift the lid on its latest AMG model, the comfortable yet massively overpowered S 65 Cabriolet, at January’s motor show in Detroit. Basically, this is a soft-top with room for four to lounge in complete comfort or to go from 0-100km/h in a Porsche 911-obliterating 4.1 seconds.

This potentially dangerous turn of speed plus the tire-shredding 630hp on tap is thanks to a meticulously hand-constructed 6-liter biturbo engine, which is making its fifth and potentially most dramatic appearance in the current Mercedes-AMG range.

“The customer base for our V12 biturbo engine expects the ultimate in every respect. That is why we are offering a four-seater high-performance convertible with this legendary power unit for the first time. The new S 65 Cabriolet sets benchmarks for all relevant criteria: top performance, a breathtaking driving experience and exquisite appointments,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.


However, this engine is being dropped in the S-Class and so the ferocity has to be balanced by formidable comfort and cutting-edge driving and safety tech. So, to ensure that passengers still feel cosseted whether the roof is up or down or no matter how far into the carpet the accelerator pedal is buried, the car has airmatic suspension for ironing out uneven asphalt.

It will also lean into or away from curves to improve cornering without spilling beverages, and has an impressively complex climate control system that deflects wind and unpleasant fumes out of the cabin with the roof down, blows warm air around occupants’ necks (called the airscarf) and heats armrests and other leather surfaces so there’s never a sense of wind chill.

Meanwhile touches that ensure the driver can unleash all 12 cylinders with confidence include a very smooth seven-speed automatic yet performance-oriented transmission, and a full head-up display to minimize distractions while optimizing the flow of information regarding speed, navigation and traffic sign recognition.


The full Distronic Plus suite of features are also on offer including lane monitoring and active lane keeping and blind spot monitoring, pre-collision braking – even at speeds of up to 100km/h – parking assist and cross traffic monitoring. Even if the car can’t avoid an accident, pre-collision systems will lock the brakes in the event of a potential rear-end shunt and pre-tension seatbelts.

The Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet will make its official debut in January at the North American International Auto Show and will go on sale in April 2016.

Mercedes-Benz is entering the market for premium business apartments in collaboration with the Frasers Hospitality Group, a leading international provider of luxury serviced apartments.

Taking the interiors of its S-Class and Maybach models as a starting point, Mercedes-Benz has completely styled six apartments (of 100 square meters each) located  in London’s glamorous Kensington area.

Each Mercedes-Benz Living @Fraser residence has two bedrooms, a living area and fitted kitchen, but everything, from the lighting system to individual pieces of furniture, have been designed to create a seamless visual flow but one that exists without making the entire space open plan.

The position, choice and development fixtures and fittings help to outline dedicated spaces within spaces.

“As in our vehicles we have combined sensual surfaces and clean lines with intelligent high-tech functionality in order to create a perfectly conceived world of modern luxury that promotes wellbeing and relaxation,” explains Gorden Wagener, head of Design at Daimler AG.

A centerpiece of each apartment will be a multimedia system that the company calls the Black Magic Wall. An entire wall given over to digital entertainment and finished in high-gloss black, it will provide a huge visual contrast and is a careful nod to the deign aesthetic of a luxury car interior.

The company turned to existing partners Burmester and Swarovski to help bring particular design and feature elements of the apartments to fruition, and if the initial London pilot scheme is a success when it opens to business travelers in November, a further nine apartments in Singapore will be similarly developed.

 is previewing the future of automotive with its Concept IAA at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Mercedes-Benz describes its Frankfurt show car as two concepts in one. And that’s because the IAA, which stands for Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile, is a shape shifter in the literal sense.

When standing still it’s a perfectly executed visual design exercise, but once it starts rolling and hits 80km/h, the car’s exterior elements realign, resulting in a shape with a drag coefficient of 0.19, which, according to the firm, is on a par with the greatest race cars ever built.

“Fascinating and technically sophisticated cars form the core of Mercedes-Benz. The ‘Concept IAA’ applies intelligent innovations to resolve the conflicting aims of functionality and aesthetics and shows that we still have plenty of ideas on how to achieve further improvements in efficiency,” says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

The Bugatti Veyron, the world’s fastest production car, also changes shape as it accelerates to better cut through the wind and to maintain grip at the limits. However, the IAA is pushing the idea to the max. The car actually grows in length by some 390mm as its aerodynamic properties change. The front bumper even moves under the car to improve airflow.

All of which allows the 279hp plug-in hybrid to achieve an all-electric range of 66km and CO2 emissions of just 28g/kg. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

And it wouldn’t be a Mercedes if the interior didn’t offer something equally impressive. Despite the car’s huge size — over 5 meters — it’s designed to seat just four people in absolute comfort.

There is a clear focus on the finest metals and glass finishes and on technology as a leisure and comfort facilitator. All controls appear and respond like the best tablet or smartphone user experiences, while car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communication ensure the vehicle avoids accidents and congestion, is prepared for adverse weather conditions, and always knows what’s coming at the end of a junction.

Mercedes-Benz wasn’t the only luxury automaker to show a four-door coupe concept in Frankfurt. Porsche unveiled the Mission E, its all-electric, battery-powered four-seat sports car concept.

 has released images of the S-Class Cabriolet ahead of its world premiere at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. It is the automaker’s first open-top four-seat flagship since 1971’s 280 SE Cabriolet.

The car is overflowing with features designed to quite literally cosset the driver and passengers — such as individual ‘air scarves’ that blow warm air around passengers’ necks, all-around double-glazed windows and integrated wind and noise deflectors. Unless it’s raining, an owner will be hard pressed to tell whether the roof is up or down.

The company hasn’t just taken the car’s hardtop sibling – the S-Class Coupé – and started cutting, even if in silhouette they’re almost identical.

The convertible has been re-engineered with strong yet light aluminum and magnesium to ensure rigidity and road-holding without extra weight. The floor has also been given an aerodynamic overhaul so that performance levels roof up or down are on par with the coupé.

Everything about the car is state-of-the-art in terms of safety, performance or comfort, from the acoustically optimized three-layer roof to the Thermotronic climate control system that uses sensors to automatically maintain cabin temperature with the roof down and can even stop things like exhaust fumes from other vehicles annoying your nostrils.

But all of this is necessary if the S Class is to attract Bentley or Rolls-Royce convertible clients to its wares.

And the company is taking no chances. As well as the S 500 model — which boasts a 449bhp V8 under its hood, Mercedes will also be taking the wraps off a much sportier S 63 AMG version.

It will boast a bi-turbo 577bhp V8 engine, a 3.9 second 0-100km/h time, and carbon ceramic brakes so it stops as quickly as it goes.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the racing driver’s incredible Mille Miglia triumph, Mercedes Benz will be celebrating all things Stirling Moss at this year’s event.

In 1955, driving a Mercedes 300 SLR, Moss set a record time — averaging 157.65km/h — over the Italian 1000-mile road race, a feat which to this day has never been bettered.

But as well as leaving his mark on the race, in 1955, Sir Stirling helped Mercedes-Benz to truly leave its mark on the world of motorsports.

In that season’s Formula One championship, he won the British Grand Prix, and eventually came second overall in the driver’s championship — pipped to the title by his Mercedes teammate, Juan Manuel Fangio.

While in sportscar racing Moss clinched the Tourist Trophy and Targa Florio alongside his Mille Miglia victory to help secure the World Sports Car Championship for Mercedes. In other words, 1955 is still to this day, Mercedes-Benz’s most successful in year in motor racing.

“Our presence at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is especially in honor of Sir Stirling Moss,” said Michael Bock, Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic and Customer Centre.

“We’ll be there with two original vehicles from 1955 — the 300 SLR, in which the now 85-year-old racing driver won that year’s Mille Miglia, and the successful W 196 R Formula One racing car.”

As an honored guest, Sir Stirling will open the field for the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance on Thursday, August 13 in a 300SL Gullwing, while for the main event, the Concours d’Elegance itself, which is held on Sunday, August 16, Mercedes will be entering Moss’s 1955 300SLR, alongside the Formula One championship W 196R racing car from the same year.

However, also being dusted off and shipped out for the event is a Mercedes-Benz C 111, its gullwing door concept car from 1970 that got the crowds so excited that they started placing orders for it.

Although it went from having a Wankle Rotary engine to a production V8 and also went through many minor styling adjustments, the C 111 never made it to production and remained an experimental vehicle, much to many supercar fans’ disappointment.

Mercedes-Benz is selling almost as many Maybach cars in China each month as it used to sell worldwide in a year, when it targeted the super-rich with a stand-alone model.

Chinese buyers are snapping up about 500 a month of the ultra-luxury variant of the Mercedes S-Class, which starts at about 1.44 million yuan ($230,000) in China. That compares to a peak of 600 Maybach cars in 2003, which at the time cost more than $350,000.

Daimler revived Maybach as a Mercedes sub-brand this year to chase the wealthiest buyers, people who otherwise might have considered a Rolls-Royce or a Bentley.

The Mercedes-Maybach adds legroom and opulent options such as hand-made silver-plated champagne goblets to the standard S-Class.

The effort appears to be working. Mercedes started selling Maybach in China in February as part of a push to catch up with BMW and Audi in the world’s largest auto market, which is suffering a slowdown.

Mercedes sales rose 20 percent last month, driven not just by Maybach but also by its compact cars and sport utility vehicles.

Can Mercedes revolutionize parking?

Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler, its car sharing subsidiary car2go and Bosch have initiated together a pilot project where cars can park by themselves on a parking garage and return autonomously to a pick up location.

The system, which will require cameras and sensors to be installed in car parks, will initially be integrated into car2go’s vehicle fleet.

Car2go is Daimler’s car-sharing service and one that relies heavily on smartphone apps and connectivity as a means of allowing customers to book and pay for car use — making it the perfect test environment.

Existing park assist, intelligent cruise control and autonomous breaking technologies available on a host of premium sedans, the Mercedes-Benz S Class included, are sufficient when working in unison for a car to be able to maneuver itself into a garage, a road-side space or into a parking bay on an outdoor car park without an accident.

However, identifying an empty space within an indoor, multi-storey car park, navigating to it and driving into it isn’t possible unless the parking structure itself is as connected as the cars within it. This is where Bosch comes in.

When the partnership is officially ratified on July 8, the company will be charged with developing the intelligent infrastructure components — parking bay sensors, cameras, etc — needed so that cars can see the layout of a car park as clearly as a human driver.

“Fully automated parking will be ready for mass-production before fully automated driving,” said Dr. Dirk Hoheisel, the responsible Board Member of Bosch. “Low driving speeds and the information from the car park infrastructure enable a fast implementation.”

When the project is completed, a car2go customer will be able to summon a vehicle to the collection point and then send it away again when it’s no longer needed.

However, what makes the Daimler/Bosch system stand out is that the companies are planning to bring it to market “in the near future.”

Nissan, Renault and Mercedes-Benz have revealed that they will jointly develop a new mid-size pick-up truck.

The companies have worked in partnership for a number of years and already share a number of commercial vehicle platforms. For example, the cheerful Renault Kangoo van-derived MPV can also be bought in certain countries, including the UK, as the Mercedes Citan instead.


Nissan’s expertise extends to the pick-up truck segment where globally it is the world’s second largest producer. Since 1933, the company has sold over 14 million one-ton pick-ups, therefore it seems like a perfect fit.

Nissan is currently developing the next generation of its own NP300 pick-up truck and it’s understood that it will share a number of platform features with the Mercedes but will be engineered by Daimler to “meet the specific needs of its customers.”

However, by sharing the costs of development, the partnership is also going to enable Renault to launch its first pick-up truck too.

The French company promises that the finished vehicle, due to go on sale in 2016, will follow its own design philosophy.

The new car, which is expected to debut within the next three years will be sold initially in Europe, Australia and South Africa.
