Travelling by train might seem like such a primitive (quaint at best) proposition today but that’s because you haven’t experienced the Belmond Andean Explorer in Peru.

Slated to launch May 2017 as South America’s first luxury sleeper train, the Belmond Andean Explorer will traverse through one of the highest rail routes on earth – along the Peruvian Andes from Cusco to Lake Titicaca and Arequipa – during the one or two-night journey.

With its interiors largely inspired by Peru’s hand-woven fabrics and the soft tones of Alpaca wool blended with Andean slate grays, designer Inge Moore of The Gallery HBA hoped to create a genuine South American experience for its residents. The Belmond Andean Explorer accommodates up to 68 guests in its en-suite cabins, including two double cabins, 20 twin cabins and 12 bunk bed cabins for travelling couples. Dining on board is an equally indulgent affair – local ingredients will mostly be used in the fresh, seasonal menus created by Belmond Hotel Monasterio’s chefs in Cusco.

Four journeys are available on this train, including the ‘Peruvian Highlands’, a three-day two-night option that travels from the ancient Inca Empire capital to the highest Andes plains (a dizzying 4800m in altitude) and then to Puno, where guests can visit Lake Titicaca and finally to Arequipa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, the ‘Spirit of the Andes’ is an overnight itinerary through the Altiplano from Lake Titicaca to Cusco. Prices of this indulgent escapade start from USD462 (SGD629) per person for one night and includes all meals, an open bar and scheduled excursions.

The Andean Explorer marks Belmond’s second venture into Peru, the first being the Hiram Bingham which runs day trips between Cusco and Machu Picchu. Local Inca Princess service is the only other first-class rail travel provider that runs through the South American country to Machu Picchu.
