Renowned Swiss watchmaker Blancpain has unveiled the X Fathoms dive watch, the most high-performance mechanical diving watch ever produced.

The waterproof masterpiece was launched on Tuesday (25 October) in the depths of the Aquarium at the Dubai Mall in the U.A.E.

The new watch provides professional divers with all the accuracy of an electronic device, while employing the traditional skills of the Swiss mechanical watch industry.

Divers have found bottles of champagne some 230 years old on the bottom of the Baltic which a wine expert described Saturday as tasting “fabulous”.

Thought to be premium brand Veuve Clicquot, the 30 bottles discovered perfectly preserved at a depth of 55 metres (180 feet) could have been in a consignment sent by France’s King Louis XVI to the Russian Imperial Court.

If confirmed, it would be by far the oldest champagne still drinkable in the world, thanks to the ideal conditions of cold and darkness.

“We have contacted (makers) Moet & Chandon and they are 98 percent certain it is Veuve Clicquot,” Christian Ekstroem, the head of the diving team said.

Originally developed in collaboration with Jacques Cousteau in the 70s, Omega is re-releasing the Ploprof Diver.

The 2009 Ploprof Diver will feature a Co-axial Caliber 8500 movement, push-button lock bezel, and a water resistance of up to 1200 meters, twice the depth rating of the 1960s version.

It also comes on the choice of three new straps, the Shark , or a black or orange rubber strap (pictured above) that is adjustable to fit over diving suits.

The 17th edition of the biggest and most recognized international boat show in the Middle East, DIBS, will open its doors in Dubai from March 3 to March 7, 2009.

The deepest pool in the world is known as Nemo 33, a recreational scuba diving center located near Brussels, Belgium which opened in 2004.

It is filled with 2,500,000 liters of non-chlorinated, highly filtered spring water maintained at 30 °C (86 °F) and contains several simulated underwater caves at the 10 m depth level.
