We’re on the tail-end of 2016 (you know those 365 days that have proven to be a whirlwind thus far, and not in a good way for most?), and it’s time to look back at the beauty trends for the year. You may recall several of these trends making their way onto the catwalks around the world over the last 12 months and even the red carpets. Before we welcome the new year, we look back at the top five beauty trends that took 2016 by storm.

Lips as dark as the soul

The beauty industry embraced this trend with the help of Kylie Jenner and Katy Perry (main picture), who both launched successful collections. The dark lips first made an appearance on the autumn/winter 2016 ready-to-wear runway shows while celebrities such as Rihanna rocked the look with much aplomb. A lover of the conventional reds and pinks, Taylor Swift was a surprise entry who flew the flag for dark lipsticks at the MET Gala.

Orange is the new blackOlivia Munn Beauty Trends 2016

Like everything in life, darkness must always be accompanied by light. Countering the trend of dark lipsticks, was the return of orange lipsticks. From Amal Clooney (she is perfect in every way, don’t even try to deny it) who donned a sunset shade at the Cannes Film Festival to Olivia Munn (above) who wore a bold tangerine hue to match her gown at the Oscars, the shade made our year just a little bit brighter.

No-makeup makeup

The barefaced beauty movement was a big one this year, with Alicia Keys, Cindy Crawford and Cameron Diaz at the front of the pack. Tying in with this movement was the no-makeup makeup look that became more sophisticated thanks to strobing and highlighting products.

The curls just wanna have funJennifer Lawrence Beauty Trends 2016

You don’t have to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel to embrace this trend. From the runways to the redcarpets, the growing appetite for curls proved to be a big one in 2016. Model Jasmine Sanders even profited from this, thanks to her new role as the face of Moroccan Oil’s new curly hair care range. At red-carpet events, Hollywood favourites such as Jennifer Lawrence (above) and Anne Hathaway showed off curly waves.

Glittered up and ready to goEmma Stone Beauty Trends 2016

The saying “All that glitters isn’t gold” may have some truth. In fact, that unmistakable shine may have been from the bright metallic and shimmery eyes we saw in 2016. From Chanel to Versace, designers paired their creations with the beauty trend. Proving to be a low-maintenance hit, the look was worn by the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone (above) and Barbara Palvin over the course of the year.
