Hong Kong Apartment Sells for $56.5 Million

An outsize luxury apartment in one of Hong Kong’s wealthiest neighbourhoods has sold for 439 million Hong Kong dollars ($56,5 million).

The five-bedroom duplex suite, near the top of the skyscraper overlooking Victoria Harbor, measures 6,158 sq feet and has a garden of 340 sq feet.

Hong Kong luxury home prices and sales have jumped this year as low supply and ample liquidity drive demand for real estate.

Hotel Washington Reopens as W Hotel

This past Thursday Washington’s luxury W Hotel opened its doors, finally. The W Hotel is the closest hotel to the White House.

So close, in fact, that an underground tunnel leads from the White House, under the Treasury Department and ends at the front door of the hotel.

The new W Hotel, the 25th to open in North America, takes over the historic Hotel Washington, which opened in 1917.

Chinese Company Buys Hummer from GM

General Motors has reached an agreement to sell its Hummer brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, the company announced Friday.

The price was not disclosed, but industry analysts had estimated that the Hummer division would sell for $150 million.

The deal would make Tengzhong the first Chinese company to sell vehicles in North America, though Hummer’s operations would remain in the United States.

Samsung launches Giorgio Armani smartphone

Armani have teamed up with Samsung to release another “haute couture” phone, this time it is a smartphone using the Windows Mobile operating system.

It’s one of the first phones available with the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, which will lead the way to a new generation of mobile applications.

The phone was released by none other than Steve Ballmer who felt, the phone was “the most fashionable phone he’s ever had a chance to talk about.”

After Beckham, Ronaldo to model Armani underwear


Cristiano Ronaldo will be the new official worldwide spokesmodel for Emporio Armani Men’s Underwear and Armani Jeans starting from Spring/Summer 2010.

He will be replacing David Beckham who has been the spokesmodel for Emporio Armani Men’s Underwear since January 2008.

In June Ronaldo signed a contract with Real Madrid, after a successful stint at Manchester United, in a deal that totaled nearly $130 million.

Yohji Yamamoto Files For Bankruptcy

Japanese clothing designer Yohji Yamamoto’s fashion house has filed for bankruptcy protection in a Tokyo court.

The company said Friday its sales had been battered by sluggish demand amid the global economic slowdown with debts totaling six billion yen ($67 million).

Integral Corp., a Japanese investment company also announced today that it will be sponsoring the fashion company’s restructuring plan.

Lorenz Bäumer for Louis Vuitton fine jewelry

Paris-based jewelry designer Lorenz Bäumer, that had designed anonymously for Chanel and Baccarat has designed a fine jewelry collection for Louis Vuitton.

The collection is named L’âme du Voyage (“the soul of the trip”) and connects Louis Vuitton’s travel heritage with Bäumer’s own penchant for going places, in fact he has lived in Bonn, Germany; Amman, Jordan; Montreal; and Tel Aviv.

The collection consists of six sets, a one-of-a-kind necklace the focal point of each, with prices running up to $2.5 million.

Versace to Close Its Japanese Stores

Bloomberg reports that Gianni Versace will shut down its stores in Japan as there is decline in the demand for luxury goods.

The fashion company has three stores in Japan, one in Osaka, one in Tokyo and one in Chiba according to the Versace website.

Versace, which entered Japan in 1981, isn’t the first brand to take this step. Last year Louis Vuitton scrapped its plans to open a store in Ginza, Tokyo.
