Newmarket Gin Launches With Race Motif

In celebration of an entire history of racing, the Bedford Lodge has created a special batch of gin for the Suffolk town.

The historic Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa, based in Newmarket at Suffolk has just launched a small batch of gin that celebrates the history of racing at Newmarket. The Newmarket Gin was created by the hotel’s Master Distiller John Walters who runs his own independent small batch copper pot distillery three miles away. Yes, the hotel has its own distiller, which we find incredible. The gin will feature designs by Nude Brand Creation.

If you happen to get your hands on a glass of this gin, be prepared for the full-on Newmarket taste. This means the classics of juniper, coriander, bay leaf, Seville Oranges, and almonds – but, also wild horseradish, Devil’s Dyke orchid petals, wild chives, alfalfa, and an assortment of wildflowers courtesy of the town’s greenery. Even if you do love your Vermouth, try considering taking this dose in the Churchill Martini style (“a tumbler of gin and a bow in the direction of France” or, in this case, Suffolk).

In any case, especially notable is the bottle. With frosted glass and a design inspired by the horse photographs of Eadweard Muybridge, there’s a sense of movement that appears when the gin refracts the light. For the full style of the racetrack, the paper label is even made in the form of a betting slip.

“Upon visiting the hotel and researching its history we began to realise just how entwined it was in the history of Newmarket’s racing and discovered numerous stories and intriguing characters that could form the basis of the product story” said Bernard Gormley, co-founder of Nude.

A limited edition batch will also coincide with the 350th anniversary of racing in Newmarket. Anniversary bottles in bespoke boxes will be presented to the winners of the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas Races, and Her Majesty the Queen. Otherwise, the Newmarket gin will initially be sold exclusively at Bedford Lodge and the Corney & Barrow in Newmarket. The limited edition Newmarket Gin (250 bottles) will retail at £70 each and 350 bottles of Anniversary Newmarket Gin will be released, which will retail at £85 each, however 75 of these will be sold in gift sets at £170.
