Azerbaijan is planning to build the world’s tallest building – taller than both the Burj Khalifa and the upcoming Kingdom Tower to be built in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Azerbaijan Tower, which is set to break ground in 2015, will  rise more than a kilometer in height, or 3,444 feet, upon its completion in 2018 or 2019,

The Azerbaijan Tower is being built on a series of artificial islands, called the Khazar Islands, constructed in the Caspian Sea off Garadag, southwest of Baku.

The record for the world’s tallest tower is set to be broken yet again… The new skyscraper will measure one kilometre high and will be located in Saudi Arabia.

The tower will outdo Gulf neighbour Dubai, which inaugurated its own record-breaking skyscraper the 828m Burj Khalifa less than two years ago.

The Saudis awarded a more than $1 billion contract for a spire, to be named the Kingdom Tower.

Construction has started on Beijing‘s tallest skyscraper, set to rise 500 metres and shaped like a vase, the state-owned CITIC group said Tuesday.

A Mumbai developer is about to start construction on what he claims will be the world’s tallest residential tower.

Mumbai builder Lodha Developers Ltd. said it will finish the over 117-story stack of private homes called “World One” in 2014.

At more than 450 meters, it will be taller than the Empire State Building in New York or the Willis Tower in Chicago.

The financially troubled Gulf emirate of Dubai on Monday opened the world’s tallest building, a glistening concrete, glass and steel pinnacle rising 828 metres (2,717 feet) out of the desert sands.

Blazing fireworks rippled up and down the massive structure after it was officially opened by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashed al-Maktoum.

He renamed the building, previously known as Burj Dubai, Burj Khalifa in honour of United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan.

Tokyo Tower was hailed as a stunning symbol of Japan’s recovery from the devastation of World War II when it opened on December 23, 1958.

Though much has changed in the last 50 years, Tokyo Tower, named the 20th tallest tower in the world, still faithfully performs its original prime function of beaming telecommunication signals across Japan’s largest city.

This year, the Tokyo Tower celebrates its 50th anniversary; to commemorate this momentous occasion, jeweler Ginza Tanaka has created a miniature 24-carat replica called the Golden Tokyo Tower.
